2011 Jeep Wrangler Overview

The 2011 Jeep Wrangler is built for off-roading, and it shows. While the Wrangler is tough to beat on rugged trails, most reviewers agreed it doesn’t make much sense as a commuting vehicle. Though auto critics thought that the Wrangler remained stable around sharp turns, they said that its handling was rough and that its steering was vague. On the highway, the Wrangler struggled with passing and merging, despite having a V6 engine. In addition, with just 15/19 mpg city/highway, the Wrangler has poor fuel economy ratings, as well as dismal safety scores.

For 2011, Jeep added more soft-touch materials, a new instrument cluster and more sound-deadening material to give the Wrangler a more comfortable feel. While acknowledging the improvement over previous models, reviewers still thought that the Wrangler’s interior was best suited for rugged, outdoorsy pursuits. Test drivers complained about the lack of legroom in the back seats, which they called flat and unsupportive. While they also noted limited small-item storage in the cabin, the Wrangler does have decent cargo space for the class.

The base Wrangler Sport comes with a soft top, foglights, cruise control and a six-speaker stereo with an auxiliary input. Available options when the Wrangler was new included Bluetooth and USB connections, a three-piece removable hardtop, navigation, leather, keyless entry, power windows and door locks and heated front seats.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re seeking a good off-road SUV, the 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser should be on your list. The FJ Cruiser gets better fuel economy and has a more powerful engine than the Wrangler. It also carries good safety scores.

The 2011 Nissan Xterra can hang with the Wrangler off-road, but reviewers said it’s also more comfortable on pavement. With the Xterra, you’ll also get better interior quality and higher safety ratings. Both vehicles have comparable fuel economy, but the Xterra has a more powerful engine and a larger cargo area than the Wrangler.
