2009 Jeep Wrangler Review

Reviewers loved the Jeep Wrangler’s iconic image and off-road performance, but its rough on-road driving manners mean that other SUVs are better for everyday use.

Pros & Cons

  • Excellent off-road performance
  • Mediocre acceleration and passing power
  • Poor fuel economy

2009 Jeep Wrangler Overview

The 2009 Jeep Wrangler has a dedicated following due to its excellent off-road performance, but in terms of daily driving, reviewers thought it can’t measure up to other 2009 compact SUVs. According to most critics, the Wrangler has a choppy highway ride with too-light steering. When it was new, reviewers said the Wrangler lacked acceleration off the line and passing power, even with a 3.8-liter V6 engine. Additionally, the Wrangler has the worst fuel economy ratings in the class along with terrible safety scores. Still, the Wrangler is one of the best off-road SUVs on the market.

Inside, reviewers thought that the Wrangler offered little comfort and had subpar interior quality, though some liked the simplicity of the Wrangler’s cabin. In terms of seating comfort and space, the Wrangler trails the competition, but it has good cargo space that can be expanded by folding down the rear seats. Test drivers complained about the lack of legroom in the back seats and thought they were especially uncomfortable when hitting the trails.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re considering the Wrangler, you should also take a look at the 2009 Toyota FJ Cruiser. The FJ Cruiser offers retro styling and good off-road abilities. Also, the FJ Cruiser gets slightly better fuel economy than the Wrangler while boasting a more powerful engine.

The 2009 Nissan Xterra is a practical choice if you’re seeking a balance between off-road performance and daily drivability. With the Xterra, you’ll get better interior quality, performance and safety ratings than the Wrangler, as well as a more-powerful engine and more-practical on-road performance.
