2015 Jeep Renegade Overview

Is the 2015 Jeep Renegade a Good Used SUV?

If you’re looking for a small-but-capable off-roader, the Jeep Renegade is a fine choice. It will also appeal to shoppers looking for a subcompact SUV with a pleasant interior. However, this Jeep isn’t without its problems. The standard manual transmission has imprecise shifts, and the available nine-speed automatic transmission is sometimes slow to respond. The Renegade also has a poor reliability rating, and its operating costs are above the class average.

How Much Does the 2015 Jeep Renegade Cost to Own?

Five-year estimated costs for gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs for the 2015 Renegade are $27,202. That’s well above average for a subcompact SUV.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New Renegade?

The 2018 Jeep Renegade starts at $18,750, and the top trim begins at $27,445. There are few differences between a used 2015 and the 2018 model. The biggest changes are inside, where 2018 models have a standard 5-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, and a rearview camera. You can get these same features in some used 2015 models, but you can’t get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which are newly available for the 2018 Renegade. If you’re tied to your smart phone, go with the 2018. Otherwise, the 2015 is a fine selection that will save you some money.

If you want a new subcompact SUV with off-roading chops for what you’d pay for a 2015 Renegade, you’re out of luck. However, there are some options for those who don’t plan to go off the road. For about what you’d pay for a fully loaded used 2015 Renegade, you can get a 2018 Hyundai Kona, which starts at $19,500. It gets better fuel economy and comes with Hyundai’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. The 2018 Honda CR-V is another option. It starts at $19,700, offers a back seat roomy enough for adults, and boasts a versatile cargo bay. We named this highly ranked SUV our 2018 Best Compact SUV for the Money.

Which Model Year of the Jeep Renegade Is Best?

The 2015 model year marks the beginning of the Renegade, and the SUV has undergone a few changes since. In 2016 Jeep added Beats Audio as an optional feature. The 2017 model saw no significant changes. We recommend the 2015 Renegade over newer models.

2015 Jeep Renegade Recalls

As of this writing, the 2015 Renegade has four open recalls. They fix an array of problems, including a trailer hitch that may separate, a transmission that may unexpectedly shift into neutral, and a rear control arm bracket weld that may fail. Another recall addresses radio software security vulnerabilities. Make sure any recalls are fixed by a dealer before buying a 2015 Renegade.

Which Used Jeep Renegade Is Right for Me?

The 2015 Jeep Renegade comes in four trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk. The base Sport trim has few standard features, though it does come with steering-wheel-mounted audio controls and keyless entry. We recommend the Jeep Renegade Latitude, which comes with some popular features like an infotainment system, a rearview camera, and cruise control.

The Jeep Renegade Limited is great for those in colder climates. It adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, a windshield wiper de-icer, remote start, and a heated steering wheel to the Latitude’s features list.

For serious off-roaders, the Trailhawk is the trim to buy. It comes standard four-wheel drive, tow hooks, a removable cargo floor panel, hill-descent control and the Jeep Selec-Terrain system with five selectable drive modes: Auto, Snow, Sand, Mud, and Rock. The Trailhawk is the only Renegade model with a Rock mode.

Certified Pre-Owned Jeep Renegade Warranty

Considering the 2015 Renegade’s below-average reliability rating, you may want to look into buying a certified pre-owned model if you decide to get one of these Jeeps. The brand has a decent CPO program according to our analysis, though you’ll find better programs from GMC and Honda.

Jeep offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles five years old or less, and with fewer than 75,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale’s date. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Jeep extends the original new-car powertrain warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles. CPO vehicles also get a three-month/3,000-mile Maximum Coverage Care warranty. There are restrictions related to mileage and models, so read the Jeep warranty page carefully.

Available driver assistance features include a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and blind spot monitoring.

2015 Jeep Renegade Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2015 Jeep Renegade or 2015 Kia Soul?

Unless you plan to go off-roading, you’re better off with the 2015 Kia Soul, which is a compact car. Like the Renegade, the Soul has a spacious and upscale interior. It also strikes an even balance between handling agility and ride quality. The Soul’s tepid acceleration is one of its few drawbacks. However, it has an above-average reliability rating, more rear-seat legroom, an extra 10.5 cubic feet of cargo space, and standard Bluetooth and satellite radio. The one thing it doesn’t do? Go off road.

Which Is Better: 2015 Jeep Renegade or 2015 Jeep Patriot?

If you’re set on the Jeep brand, you’re much better off with a 2015 Jeep Renegade than a 2015 Jeep Patriot. Like its sibling, the Patriot offers available four-wheel drive but has a short list of standard features. However, the Patriot has a cheaply made cabin, subpar safety scores, clumsy handling, and a rough ride over bumpy roads. Making matters worse, the Patriot’s engines are noisy, unrefined, and sluggish. Skip the Patriot in favor of the Renegade.

Which Is Better: 2015 Jeep Renegade or 2015 Jeep Compass?

Although it has a little more rear-seat legroom than the Renegade, the 2015 Jeep Compass is not a good buy. It lacks the Renegade’s engine power, and it has sloppy handling, a rough ride, and poor maneuverability. Inside, the Compass has cheap cabin materials and narrow seatbacks. The lack of a telescoping wheel also makes finding a comfortable driving position difficult. Stick with the Renegade.

2015 Renegade Performance

How Does the 2015 Jeep Renegade Drive?

The Jeep Renegade has sporty handling, enabling it to round corners with little body roll. Although the Renegade’s ride is somewhat firm, it still remains relatively smooth over rough roads.

The Renegade comes standard with front-wheel drive, but it’s the models with four-wheel drive that excite off-roaders. There are two available full-time four-wheel-drive systems. Both come with hill-descent control and Selec-Terrain, which has four different drive modes: Auto, Snow, Sand, and Mud. Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the Trailhawk, which adds a Rock mode for soldiering along craggy trails.

The Renegade comes standard with a turbocharged 160-horsepower four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission. A 180-horsepower four-cylinder engine with an available nine-speed automatic transmission is also available.

The base engine produces decent power for both highway and city driving. The larger engine gives the Renegade faster acceleration, but it doesn't enhance performance that much. Also, the manual transmission has imprecise shift action, and the automatic can be slow to respond.

Does the 2015 Jeep Renegade Get Good Gas Mileage?

The EPA estimates that the base Renegade gets up to 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway for both front- and four-wheel-drive models. That is on par with the fuel economy of most subcompact SUVs. Front-wheel-drive models with the 180-horsepower engine are rated at 22/30 mpg city/highway, and 4WD models see a dip of 1 mpg in both city and highway driving.

2015 Jeep Renegade Towing Capacity

Jeep does not recommend towing with a front-wheel-drive Renegade equipped with the base engine. However, models with the 180-horsepower engine and four-wheel drive can tow up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped.

2015 Renegade Interior

How Many People Does the 2015 Renegade Seat?

The Renegade seats five on standard cloth upholstery. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver seat are available. The Renegade has ample head- and legroom and can easily accommodate taller riders in both rows.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2015 Jeep Renegade?

There are two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors on the rear outboard seats, as well as a tether-only connection on the middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Renegade’s LATCH system the second-lowest rating of Marginal. The tether anchors are in hard-to-find locations, and the lower anchors are too deep in the seats and difficult to maneuver around.

2015 Jeep Renegade Features

Standard features include a four-speaker audio system, plus auxiliary and USB inputs. Many popular features like air conditioning and Bluetooth are not standard. We recommend looking for models with the available Uconnect infotainment system. It’s not only easy to use, but it also gives you plenty of ways to stay entertained. You’ll get satellite radio, Bluetooth, and an extra USB port. In the upper trims, Uconnect comes with navigation and a larger touch screen. A removable glass sunroof, called MySky, is also available.
