2013 Jeep Patriot Overview

Is the 2013 Jeep Patriot a Good Used SUV?

In short, the Patriot is not a good used SUV. It is really only good at off-roading – and even there, it's bested by the Jeep Wrangler. The Patriot's engines are underpowered and aren't particularly fuel-efficient. The cabin is also fitted with cheap materials, and there are very few standard features.

Used 2013 Jeep Patriot Performance and Interior

The Patriot is available with a choice of two four-cylinder engines: a 158-horsepower 2.0-liter in front-wheel-drive models, or a 172-horsepower 2.4-liter in four-wheel-drive models. Both engines come standard with either a manual or an automatic transmission. The Patriot has sluggish acceleration, regardless of the powertrain. Drivers who plan on taking this crossover off-roading will want to stick with the manual transmission.

Fuel economy for this SUV ranges from a class-competitive 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway with the base engine, manual transmission, and front-wheel drive, to a low 20/23 mpg city/highway with the larger engine, automatic transmission, and four-wheel drive.

The 2018 Patriot has tight steering and forceful brakes, but it's not as athletic as many small crossover rivals, and its ride can be rough over bumpy roads. Models equipped with the available four-wheel-drive system, which Jeep calls Freedom Drive II, can handle some light off-roading duty, though the Jeep Wrangler is better prepared to tackle tough trails.

Hard plastics cover most surfaces in the Patriot's cabin. While they may not be as high-quality or attractive as those in some compact SUV rivals, they are at least easy to clean after a day of muddy outdoor pursuits. The five seats come covered with standard cloth upholstery, and optional upgrades to look for include leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and heated front seats. The driver and front passenger will enjoy plenty of head- and legroom, though the second row is a bit cramped for tall adults. There are two full sets of LATCH child-seat connectors in the rear seats, along with an extra upper tether anchor on the middle rear seat. With up to 53.5 cubic feet of cargo room, the Patriot has less space for your stuff than many other compact crossovers.

In the base trim, there are very few features. Air conditioning and power windows don't even come standard, though upper trims have them. Bluetooth, a touch-screen navigation system, and a Boston Acoustics audio system are some of the Patriot's optional extras. The navigation system can complicate some audio settings, and some of the physical controls on the center stack and steering wheel are not intuitively arranged. The gauge cluster is clearly labeled and easy to read.

Is the 2013 Patriot the Best Model Year to Buy?

The 2013 Jeep Patriot is part of the vehicle's only generation, which includes the 2007 through 2017 model years. There are no major differences between the 2011, 2012, and 2013 model years. The Patriot was refreshed in 2011, so older models will have a different appearance.

Which Used Jeep Patriot Is Right for Me?

Of the three trim levels available (Sport, Latitude, and Limited), most buyers will find the greatest value with the Jeep Patriot Latitude. The base Sport trim is sparsely equipped; air conditioning and power windows don't even come standard in this model. Latitude models include both of those features, as well as heated seats, keyless entry, and a reclining rear seat. Buyers that move up to the Limited trim will get automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, and satellite radio. Some Latitude or Limited models may be equipped with options packages that add features like a Boston Acoustics audio system, a sunroof, a touch-screen navigation system, Bluetooth, or a USB port.

You may also want to consider a certified pre-owned Patriot for added peace of mind. For certified pre-owned Jeep vehicles, the original new-car powertrain warranty is extended to seven years or 100,000 miles. CPO vehicles also get a three-month/3,000-mile Maximum Coverage Care warranty. There are restrictions related to mileage and models, so read the Jeep warranty page carefully. The model's original sale date determines whether or not it is eligible for the CPO program.

2013 Jeep Patriot and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2013 Jeep Patriot or 2013 Jeep Compass?

The Jeep Compass is the Patriot's closest sibling, and they share many of the same components. Both models have underpowered engines, few interior features, and low reliability ratings. The Patriot has a slightly higher safety score, but the Compass has nicer cabin materials. In the end, we can't recommend buying either one.

Which Is Better: 2013 Jeep Patriot or 2013 Nissan Rogue?

By every measure, the Nissan Rogue is a better SUV than the Patriot. The Rogue has better interior materials, a longer list of standard features, and excellent passenger and cargo room. The Rogue also gets higher safety, reliability, and fuel economy ratings.
