2010 Jeep Patriot Review

The 2010 Jeep Patriot is a strong off-road performer, but it’s not well-rounded enough to compete against most other 2010 compact SUVs.

Pros & Cons

  • Spacious interior
  • Good off-road performance with four-wheel drive
  • Solid safety scores
  • Underpowered engines
  • Back seats are flat and uncomfortable

2010 Jeep Patriot Overview

When it was new, reviewers found that the 2010 Jeep Patriot performs best on smooth highways or rugged terrain. Two four-cylinder engines are available, but test drivers thought that the Patriot was severely underpowered, saying that it struggled with merging and passing. Though auto critics praised the Patriot’s suspension and steering and thought that it was an excellent off-road option with the available four-wheel drive package, they also said it isn’t as capable as the 2010 Jeep Wrangler. The Patriot gets good fuel economy at up to 23/29 mpg city/highway, and its safety scores are also good for the class.

The 2010 Patriot’s interior layout was well-liked by auto critics when it was new. Though most reviewers thought the Patriot had improved material quality over previous models, they also noted that it is still less refined than vehicles like the 2010 Honda CR-V. Test drivers felt that the front seats were adequate, but disliked the back seats for being firm, flat and offering little thigh support. With the rear seats folded, the Patriot has 54.2 cubic feet of cargo space, which is a bit low for the class. However, reviewers liked the Patriot’s washable floor mat and available flip-down speakers for tailgating.

The base Patriot Sport comes with a four-speaker stereo with an auxiliary input, while the Limited trim adds features like foglights, keyless entry, cruise control, leather, heated front seats and a CD changer. A sunroof, upgraded stereo, Bluetooth and navigation were all optional when the Patriot was new.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re considering the Patriot, you should check out the highly-ranked 2010 Hyundai Tucson. With the Tucson, you’ll get good performance along with higher interior quality than the Patriot. In addition, the Tucson gets better fuel economy with a slightly more powerful engine, though it isn’t as capable off-road as the Patriot.

The 2010 Chevrolet Equinox is one of the top choices in the class with strong performance and a versatile interior. It also has excellent safety scores and edges the Patriot in fuel economy while producing more horsepower. The Equinox also has slightly more space than both the Patriot and Tucson, but isn’t built to go far off-road.
