2011 Jeep Liberty Review

The 2011 Jeep Liberty deftly tackles dirt trails and mountain slopes, but when it comes to daily use, it lags behind the pack.

Pros & Cons

  • Ample cargo space with easily adjustable seating
  • Good off-road performance
  • Underpowered engine with truck-like handling
  • Low fuel economy for its class

2011 Jeep Liberty Overview

Jeep’s longstanding reputation for producing capable off-roaders is maintained with the 2011 Jeep Liberty, but it can’t compete with smooth-riding compact SUVs that make more sense as daily drivers. When it was new, test drivers complained about the Liberty’s underpowered V6 engine. Reviewers said the Liberty struggles with passing and merging maneuvers, and disliked the Liberty’s truck-like handling, especially in a class with more refined options like the 2011 Honda CR-V.

At 16/22 mpg city/highway, the base rear-wheel drive Liberty offers fuel economy that’s low for the class, especially compared with crossovers like the 2011 Hyundai Tucson and 2011 GMC Terrain.

When it was new, reviewers felt that the Liberty’s interior was decent enough, but couldn’t compete with the comfort and quality of some rivals like the 2011 Toyota RAV4. Most reviewers thought that the Liberty’s seats were uncomfortable and that back-seat space was lacking. Due to the narrow rear door openings, critics felt that entry and exit was also difficult in the Liberty. Still, reviewers liked the Liberty’s cargo space and noted the easily adjustable rear seats that allowed for extra room.

The base Sport trim comes with features that include automatic headlamps, keyless entry, cruise control and a stereo with an auxiliary input and satellite radio. Options and features on higher trims include roof rails, foglights, heated front seats, leather, parking sensors, Bluetooth, navigation and a sunroof.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re considering the Liberty, the highly-ranked 2011 Chevrolet Equinox is also worth a look. The Equinox offers higher safety ratings, along with good performance. Additionally, the Equinox gets better fuel economy without sacrificing much in terms of driving dynamics, though it’s less powerful than the Liberty.

When it was new, reviewers loved the 2011 Subaru Forester’s sedan-like driving dynamics. With the Forester, you’ll get better safety, interior quality and performance. In addition, the Forester gets better fuel economy than the Liberty while featuring standard all-wheel drive. It has a less powerful engine, but a turbocharged engine is available if you’re seeking more power.
