2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.5

The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee has an upscale cabin that features premium materials and a modern design. Passenger room is ample with comfortable and welcoming seats. The standard infotainment system is user-friendly and visually engaging. Cargo room is low for the class but still usable.

  • "Throw in available first-class accommodations, including just about every upscale amenity you can think of, and it's no wonder that the Grand Cherokee enjoys such an enthusiastic following." -- Edmunds
  • "‘Jeep Grand Cherokee’ may be a venerable nameplate, but the SUV's interior is as contemporary as you'll find anywhere. This well-finished space accommodates up to five adult passengers, and soft-touch surfaces are plentiful, accented by tasteful wood trims." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "These are seriously nice trucks, even in base Laredo trim, raising the benchmark for affordable SUV interiors yet again." -- Cars.com (2014)

Seating

The 2017 Grand Cherokee has seating for five people on standard cloth upholstery. A leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel also come standard. Optional upgrades include leather/suede seats, leather upholstery, premium leather seats, a power driver and passenger’s seat, heated front- and second-row seats, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and memory settings for the front seats and sideview mirrors.

All of the Grand Cherokee’s seats provide good support and comfort, and optional fabric choices enhance the cabin environment. The vehicle can seat five, and passenger room is good all-around, with ample space in the second row for full-size adults.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the Grand Cherokee’s LATCH system a rating of Marginal, the second-worst designation. The top tether anchors could be confused with other hardware, and the lower anchors are too deep in the seat and hard to maneuver around. However, it requires little force to attach the car seat straps to the lower anchors.

  • "Jeep's 2017 Grand Cherokee spans from a reasonably comfortable SUV to one capable of giving some luxury brands a run for their money. All models are 2-row/5-passenger configurations -- there is no 3rd-row option. This layout offers good room for passengers." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Although the Grand Cherokee has no third-row seat option, there's ample room for a family of four or five, and you can order up a variety of luxury accoutrements, including ventilated front seats and a dual-screen, Blu-ray-capable rear entertainment system with an HDMI input. Backseat passengers should be pretty comfortable, and the Grand Cherokee provides enough space for two adults to relax (the center position is compromised by the prominent driveline ‘hump’ on the floor)." -- Edmunds
  • "The seats are all-day comfortable, front and rear, available in top-quality premium leather, with more optional stitched leather covering the dash in higher trims." -- Cars.com (2014)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2017 Grand Cherokee include dual-zone automatic climate control, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, voice command activation, a USB port, the Uconnect infotainment system with a 5-inch touch screen, proximity key entry, push-button ignition, a rearview camera, and rear parking sensors.

Optional features include an auto-dimming rearview mirror, satellite radio, an 8.4-inch touch screen, navigation, two USB ports, an Alpine nine-speaker audio system, a 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, a 115-volt power outlet, a rear dual-screen DVD/Blu-ray entertainment system, remote start, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, parking assist, automatic high-beam assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

The Uconnect infotainment system is intuitive and easy to use with its standard touch screen. An available 8.4-inch screen features sharp graphics and makes it simple to control most of the car’s interior functions. Some critics note that changing climate settings requires too many steps. However, physical buttons can also be used for controls like audio volume and temperature.

  • "We're especially fond of the optional 8.4-inch touchscreen and highly recommend it. It features an easy-to-use interface and includes a Wi-Fi hot spot and smartphone app integration; it also houses the navigation system if the vehicle is so equipped. Sometimes it takes a few too many touch inputs to make climate control adjustments through the touchscreen, but apart from that minor complaint, the Grand Cherokee has a pleasantly user-friendly cabin." -- Edmunds
  • "Jeep's Uconnect infotainment system is one of the best in the industry. An 8.4-inch touch panel displays large, easy-to-see graphics, and the system's voice-recognition software allows for control of the navigation, audio, hands-free texting and mobile apps such as Pandora." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Generally regarded as one of the more user-friendly infotainment setups on the market, Uconnect Access integrates most of the truck's audio, navigation and climate control functions into one unit. An 8.4-inch touchscreen mounted on the dashboard is the central component of the system, but redundant buttons and knobs for climate and audio volume and tuning are also included." -- Left Lane News (2016)

Cargo

The Grand Cherokee offers 36.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seat up and 68.3 cubic feet with it folded down. Both of those figures are among the lowest in the class. A power liftgate optional.

  • "This layout offers … a healthy 36.3 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats. Folded, that space expands to 68.3 cubic feet." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Cargo capacity measures 36.3 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks in place and 68.3 cubic feet with those seatbacks folded down. This amount is OK, but the Toyota 4Runner gives you a lot more space, as will many three-row crossover SUVs." -- Edmunds
