2020 Jeep Compass Interior Review

Interior: 7.1

The 2020 Jeep Compass receives lots of praise for its infotainment system, which includes an attractive set of standard features and an easy-to-use interface. The seats are roomy but only moderately comfortable, and the cargo area is smaller than that in most other compact SUVs. While Jeep now offers many safety features across the lineup, very few advanced features are standard.

  • "… the interior is nicely styled, but material quality is only so-so." -- CNET
  • "Inside, the Compass is handsome and well-equipped, especially in terms of its abundant, user-friendly technology. Materials quality is merely acceptable, though, and you won't find the sort of clever small item storage up front as you'll find in many compact SUV competitors." -- Autotrader (2019)
  • "The newest Compass is miles better than the previous, pre-2017 version. Durable soft-touch interior materials are well-represented, and leather covers the steering wheel and shift knob. We noticed no creaks or rattles, even on the bumpiest of trails." -- Edmunds (2018)

The two-row Compass has five seats. Long-legged travelers have enough room in the front seats and enjoy good outward visibility; they’ll also have no trouble stretching out in the rear outboard seats. However, this Jeep isn't as comfortable as some other compact SUVs. The seat cushions are on the firm side, and the Compass offers fewer upgrades than its rivals.

The Compass comes standard with cloth upholstery, six-way manually adjustable front seats, and a 60/40-split-folding rear seat. Upgrades include eight-way power-adjustable front seats, memory settings, cloth and vinyl seat upholstery, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and a leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel.

For installing child safety seats, the Compass has two complete sets of LATCH connections for the rear outboard seats and an upper tether anchor for the rear middle seat.

  • "Passenger space is about average for the compact class, but many competitors offer more luxurious accommodations and a greater loadout of premium amenities." -- CNET
  • "The seat cushions are firm, but there's plenty of head- and legroom." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "The Compass also offers considerably more cargo space and rear-seat legroom than the Renegade, but because it's not as tall and upright as the smallest Jeep, the Compass offers less headroom. Four 6-footers -- five in a pinch -- can ride comfortably." -- Autotrader (2017)

Interior Features

Every Compass comes with the Uconnect infotainment system, which professional reviewers call one of the best around. It's easy to use, and it offers effortless smartphone integration via its sharp touch screen. Some critics bemoan the Compass' limited number of available charge ports.

This SUV comes standard with a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, two USB ports, a six-speaker sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and push-button start. Options include an 8.4-inch infotainment touch screen, a navigation system, a nine-speaker Alpine premium audio system, a Beats premium audio system, HD Radio, satellite radio, a dual-pane sunroof, remote start, and proximity keyless entry.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera. Many of the Compass' higher-ranking rivals come with more standard features. For 2020, Jeep extended its list of safety upgrades to every Compass trim. Available safety options include full-speed forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and rear parking sensors.

  • "There's more great tech inside the Compass; Fiat-Chrysler's Uconnect infotainment software is one of my favorites. Here, and on other upper-level Compass trims, Uconnect is displayed on an 8.4-inch touchscreen, which responds quickly to inputs. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, and Garmin-based navigation is available. Charge points are in short supply, with just one USB outlet for each row of seats. A 12-volt outlet is available in each row, too, though rear passengers do get a 115-volt, 150-watt, three-prong outlet." -- CNET
  • "Three versions of Uconnect are available; our experience is with the largest … system with optional navigation. The graphics are crisp and the touchscreen is responsive. The menus are customizable, giving you the ability to make your most frequently used functions visible at all times." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "As with the Uconnect systems found in other Fiat Chrysler products, the 8.4-inch unit we played with was quick to respond to touch inputs and easy to use. A handful of hard buttons located near the HVAC controls ensures that even the least tech-savvy operators can complete basic multimedia commands." -- Car and Driver (2017)

The cargo area in the Compass is small for a compact SUV, with 27.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 59.8 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. When it comes to hauling a variety of things, however, this vehicle is user-friendly, thanks in part to its assortment of in-cabin cubbies and a front passenger seat that folds forward to haul long items. Note that this feature is only present on manually adjustable front passenger seats. A power liftgate is available.

  • "The 60/40-split rear seats fold down nearly flat, and the armrest bin and glovebox are well sized for your personal items. The door pockets can accommodate larger water bottles, and the cupholders do an effective job of holding bottles and cups firmly in place." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "The new Compass keeps the cool fold-flat front passenger seat that lets owners carry ladders, long 2x4s and such inside. And there's a new configurable multilevel cargo floor for managing different loads." -- Autotrader (2017)
  • "In back, the cargo area is wide at the rear and fairly sizable. … That folded seat back doesn't lay quite flat and it rests about one inch below the level of the cargo floor, but that's far better than resting one inch above, as there's no problem sliding long items forward. Speaking of long items, the Compass also has a fold-flat front passenger seat that allows for really long items to be carried. There are also a few tie-down hooks in back, along with some hidden storage space under the cargo floor." -- Consumer Guide (2017)
