  • Stylish, high-quality interior
  • Spacious cabin
  • Weak engine
  • Poor predicted reliability
  • Sluggish acceleration

2017 Jeep Compass Overview

Is the 2017 Jeep Compass a Good Used SUV?

Jeep completely redesigned the Compass for the 2017 model year. However, the automaker continued to sell the older model alongside the new. Neither SUV is good. This is a review of the redesigned model; to get a better sense for the model sold alongside it, read our 2016 Jeep Compass review.

The redesigned 2017 Jeep Compass has meager acceleration, a terrible predicted reliability score, and worrying safety scores. This vehicle may have lower ownership costs and a better infotainment system than many other compact SUVs, but those factors aren’t enough to lift this SUV from the bottom of the class.

How Much Does the 2017 Jeep Compass Cost to Own?

Projected five-year costs for gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs for the 2017 Compass are estimated to be $22,145. That’s below average for the compact SUV class.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New Compass?

There are no significant changes between the 2018 Jeep Compass and the 2017 Compass. The 2018 model starts at $21,095. You’ll probably pay less for a 2017, especially if you’re comparing base models. Save some money and buy the used Compass.

If you prefer to buy new, you won’t find any 2018 compact SUVs for the average price of a used 2017 Compass ($18,400). However, the subcompact SUV class has many options in the same price range. A 2018 Hyundai Kona is a good choice, with a starting price of $19,500. It doesn’t have the Compass’ off-road capabilities, but the Kona has agile handling, above-average predicted reliability, and an attractive interior with comfortable seats. However, you will give up a substantial amount of total cargo space. The Compass has 59.8 cubic feet, while the Kona has 45.8 cubic feet.

2017 Jeep Compass Recalls

As of this writing, the 2017 Compass has four open recalls. The left front halfshaft, which distributes power from the transmission to the front wheels, may disengage or break. The second recall deals with an overly bright instrument cluster that can’t be dimmed. The third addresses an available fire extinguisher that could be clogged, and the fourth involves incorrect owner’s manual instructions for jump starting the Compass. Make sure these recalls are taken care of before making your purchase.

Which Used Jeep Compass Model Is Right for Me?

Which used Jeep Compass model is right for you depends on your needs. If you’re a serious off-roader, check out the Trailhawk. It has four-wheel drive with low-range mode, all-season on/off road tires, hill-descent control, and skid plates. The Trailhawk also has the top-of-the-line UConnect 8.4 infotainment system.

Non off-roaders will find the Compass Sport trim meets most of their needs. It has an impressive selection of infotainment features for a base model, including a six-speaker sound system, two USB ports, and the UConnect 5.0 infotainment system, which includes a 5-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, voice recognition, and hands-free text messaging. The Latitude adds upgraded upholstery while the Limited has standard four-wheel drive and comfort features like heated front seats and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat.

Certified Pre-Owned Jeep Compass Warranty

Considering the 2017 Compass’s low predicted reliability, getting a certified pre-owned model isn’t a bad idea. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Jeep extends the original new-car powertrain warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles. CPO vehicles also get a three-month/3,000-mile Maximum Coverage Care warranty. There are restrictions related to mileage and models, so read the Jeep warranty page carefully.

Jeep’s CPO program is less robust than what Honda, Toyota, GMC, Buick, and many others offer.

2017 Jeep Compass Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2017 Jeep Compass or 2017 Ford Escape?

The 2017 Ford Escape is superior to the 2017 Compass in almost every way, except two. The base Compass has a more powerful engine and better off-road capabilities than the Escape, but the Ford has stronger available engines. The Escape also has a very quiet interior, and it earns a much better rating for predicted reliability. Unless you’re going to do serious off-roading, the choice is easy – go for the Escape.

Which Is Better: 2017 Jeep Compass or 2017 Nissan Rogue?

Like the 2017 Compass, the 2017 Nissan Rogue has an underpowered engine that struggles during highway passing maneuvers. However, the Rogue has effortless handling and is one of the most fuel-efficient, non-hybrid compact SUVs you’ll find. It also has an available third row of seats. The Rogue can’t match the Compass’ off-road capabilities, but it is the superior choice otherwise.

2017 Compass Performance

How Does the 2017 Jeep Compass Drive?

The 2017 Compass drives well, even when equipped with available four-wheel drive. Its suspension soaks up on-road imperfections and off-road challenges nicely, and it limits body roll around turns.

The base 2017 Compass has a 180-horsepower four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission. Six-speed and nine-speed automatic transmissions are available, depending on the trim and drivetrain.

Does the 2017 Jeep Compass Get Good Gas Mileage?

The 2017 Compass with a six-speed manual transmission has an EPA rating of 23 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. The six-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive is rated at 22/31 mpg city/highway, which equals the four-wheel-drive model with a manual transmission. The four-wheel-drive Compass with the nine-speed-automatic is rated at 22/30 mpg city/highway.

2017 Jeep Compass Towing Capacity

When properly equipped, the 2017 Compass can tow up to 2,000 pounds. However, keep in mind that the Compass’ underpowered engine struggles even without items in tow.

How Many People Does the 2017 Compass Seat?

There is seating for five on standard cloth upholstery in the 2017 Compass. Available features include heated front seats, leather upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and a front passenger seat that folds flat. Head- and legroom are sufficient, but an available sunroof may cramp taller passengers.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2017 Jeep Compass?

The 2017 Compass has a set of LATCH car-seat connectors in each of its outboard rear seats and a middle-seat tether anchor. LATCH systems in Compass models built after December 2016 received the lowest rating of Poor from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The lower anchors are too deep in the seat, require too much force to attach, and are difficult to maneuver around.

The LATCH system in older 2017 models earned the second highest rating of Acceptable. Their lower anchors are buried too deep in the seats, and the tether anchor could be confused with other hardware.

2017 Jeep Compass Features

The 2017 Jeep Compass comes standard with a 3.5-inch driver-information display, a six-speaker sound system, two USB ports, and the UConnect 5.0 infotainment system, which includes a 5-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, voice recognition, and hands-free text messaging. Available features include a 7-inch driver-information display, and an upgraded UConnect 7.0 system, with a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite radio. An even better available UConnect 8.4 system features an 8.4-inch touch screen, predictive traffic and weather, voice command, and Siri Eyes Free.

All three UConnect systems are easy to operate. They recognize swipe and pinch-to-zoom gestures (like on a smartphone), and all three touch screens are responsive. The intuitive menus are easy to navigate. There are easy-to-reach climate controls, including knobs and buttons.
