2016 Jeep Compass Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 6.0

The 2016 Jeep Compass uses mid- to low-grade materials throughout its interior, according to critics, and they note that most rivals surpass the Compass in this regard. Some testers had difficulty finding a comfortable driving position, and many agree that the rear seats are undersized. The features list is shorter than that of many competitors, and the cargo space is below average for the class, although reviewers appreciate the available fold-flat passenger seat for its added versatility.

  • "Jeep upgraded some of the Compass's interior materials last year, including available accent stitching on certain trim pieces, but industrial-grade plastics are still the order of the day. Moreover … USB connectivity remains optional, even on the upper trim levels, and the base Sport has to make do with crank windows and manual locks." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "The interior of the 2014 Jeep Compass includes soft-touch materials on the door trim, a comfortable center armrest and a steering wheel that provides decent feel and grip." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014)
  • "The 2014's upgraded interior adds chrome accents, a vinyl-wrapped center armrest and updated instrument panel graphics. The Latitude trim level has new accent-stitched mesh-and-vinyl seats and the Limited offers Saddle Brown perforated leather seats. These steps represent Jeep's gradual efforts to make the Compass competitive against more richly appointed models, many of which have been fully redesigned in recent years." -- Cars.com (2014)
  • "Around the cabin, the interior appointments are unimpressive as well." -- AutoTrader (2014)

Seating

The five-seat Jeep Compass comes standard with cloth upholstery. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat and reclining rear seats are available. Test drivers say the front seats offer adequate comfort and support, but some add that the rear seats are cramped. Some also think that finding a comfortable driving position is difficult, as the steering wheel does not telescope. A few comment that the Compass' large roof pillars impede outward sightlines.

  • "The front seats are comfortable enough and adequately supportive for longer drives, though the seatback cushions are a little narrow for larger adults. Rear legroom is tight for this class, reminding us more of a compact hatchback than a typical high-riding, airy crossover." -- Edmunds
  • "In base models, the driver's seat doesn't adjust for height, and no version of the Compass has a telescoping steering wheel, which makes it harder to find a perfect driving position. Rear legroom is good." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "Headroom and legroom are ample. Some testers had a hard time finding an ideal driving position, which they put down to Compass' lack of a telescopic steering column. Thick front and rear roof pillars hamper visibility. The high-set front seats and oddly short windshield also pinch the view ahead." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2016 Compass include a four-speaker audio system, satellite radio, an auxiliary input and the Uconnect infotainment system with Bluetooth audio streaming. Available features include power windows, power door locks, a power sunroof, automatic climate control, a USB port, a nine-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system, flip-down liftgate speakers for outdoor enjoyment, a rearview camera and an upgraded Uconnect system with a 6.5-inch touch screen, voice recognition, Bluetooth phone connectivity and navigation.

Critics think the Compass offers little in the way of standard features, as most class rivals come standard with power windows and door locks, unlike the Compass. They also report that the infotainment system is less modern and trickier to use than the systems found in other Jeep or FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) vehicles. However, they praise the dashboard controls for being easily reachable.

  • "In terms of infotainment, the optional 6.5-inch touchscreen is older and less user-friendly than the 8.4-inch 'Uconnect' interface found in most other Jeep and Chrysler models." -- Edmunds
  • "The ignition is definitely from a Chrysler Sebring circa 1999, and the rest of the controls could easily be as old." -- AutoWeek (2014)
  • "All controls are mounted high on the dashboard and are within easy reach for driver or front passenger. A couple of the audio buttons are on the small side, but that little fault is easy to overlook." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Cargo

The Compass has below-average cargo capacity for the class, with 22.7 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up and 53.6 with them folded down. The Compass has an available fold-flat front passenger seat, which reviewers say helps offset the subpar cargo capacity.

  • "The Compass does offer some clever interior features, such as distinctive (and optional) speakers that flip down and out from the raised liftgate for beach parties and the like. However, the maximum cargo capacity of 53.6 cubic feet pales in comparison to rival crossovers. Behind the second row, the Compass' 22.7-cubic-foot cargo hold is also quite stingy." -- Edmunds
  • "One of the most appealing aspects of an SUV is its ability to haul stuff. And the Jeep Compass has a trick up its sleeve with a front-passenger seat that folds forward to create a flat surface. Standard in Latitude and Limited models, it accommodates longer items like surfboards and lumber." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "Cargo space behind the rear seat is less impressive but adequate. And unlike many SUVs, the rear seats fold to leave a flat floor-a boon for cargo-carrying. An available fold-flat front passenger seat allows for the toting of skis and other long items with the tailgate completely closed." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
