2011 Jeep Compass Review

The Jeep Compass was updated for 2011 and boasts good fuel economy estimates, but cheap interior materials and middling performance mean that the Compass is easily outranked by many compact SUVs.

Pros & Cons

  • Good fuel economy
  • Subpar interior materials
  • Lack of off-road capabilities
  • Small cargo capacity for the class
  • Back seats are uncomfortable

2011 Jeep Compass Overview

For 2011, the Jeep Compass received a much-needed update, with revisions to the suspension that most reviewers said made it a much more capable off-road performer. On pavement, however, reviewers said that the Compass’ engine was lethargic, noisy and couldn’t match the performance of many other 2011 compact SUVs. Available with front- or all-wheel drive, the 2011 Compass gets up to 23/29 mpg city/highway, which is fairly good for the class.

A manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT) is available, but auto critics took issue with the CVT, saying that it’s slow to respond to driver inputs. Test drivers thought that the 2011 Compass inspired driver confidence more than previous models with its improved stability and steering, but they still preferred the handling of other compact SUVs.

Despite its revised interior, reviewers felt that the Compass’ cabin lacked the spaciousness and comfort of competing SUVs. They did appreciate the improved materials in the Compass’ cabin, including the revised center armrest and steering wheel-mounted controls. However, auto critics said the back seat was cramped. The Compass also has less cargo space than most other SUVs in the class.

Roof rails, foglights, cruise control and a stereo with an auxiliary input are among the base Compass’ standard features. When it was new, options and features on the higher Limited trim include heated front seats, leather, satellite radio, automatic climate control, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, navigation and a sunroof.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re looking at the Compass, you should consider the 2011 Kia Sportage because of its good performance and excellent safety scores. The Sportage also received better interior reviews than the Compass and it gets better fuel economy while generating 18 more horsepower.

The 2011 Chevrolet Equinox is worth a look because of its excellent interior quality. The Equinox also gets better fuel economy than the Compass with a more powerful base engine, and it has more cargo space. With the Equinox, you’ll get better performance than the Compass, but you’ll sacrifice some off-road abilities.
