2020 Jeep Cherokee Interior Review

Interior: 7.1

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee looks pretty good inside. It features mostly quality materials, though there are some hard plastics here and there. Both rows of seats are comfortable and supportive, and the infotainment system is one of the most user-friendly in the compact SUV class. Cargo space is on the low side for a small crossover, however.

  • Unlike the exterior, the interior remains largely unchanged. That's just fine, as it remains a bright spot despite having less passenger and cargo space than its competitors." -- Autoblog (2019)
  • "Inside, soft surfaces abound, with the dashtop, door tops, and armrests all being padded, and available two-tone combinations add some contrast." -- Consumer Guide (2019)
  • "Instead of trying to fix what wasn't broken, Jeep's interior designers focused most of their efforts on giving the cabin a more premium feel. Hard plastics are still used in a few places, but the areas that did get upgraded materials do improve the overall experience. That's especially true if you spring for the top-level Overland trim." -- Motor Trend (2019)

The five-seat Cherokee comes standard with cloth upholstery. Upgraded cloth and vinyl upholstery, leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The front seats are comfortable and have plenty of head- and legroom. They're also easy to adjust when you’re looking for a suitable driving position. The rear seats aren't particularly spacious, but they still provide enough room for most adults to sit comfortably.

For securing child safety seats, the Cherokee has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for its rear outboard seats. There is an upper tether anchor and one lower anchor for the rear middle seat, which has the ability to borrow a lower anchor from an adjoining seat. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the setup is easy to use.

  • The Cherokee's seats are fairly comfortable and get better as you climb the trim levels, although driver comfort is somewhat diminished by a steering column that lacks sufficient travel from both its tilt and telescoping functions. Rear-seat comfort is acceptable, with good head- and legroom for average-size passengers." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • Front seaters are treated to very good headroom and legroom, and – notably – the driver seat can be raised way up (a boon to shorter folks), and upper-line models offer heat/ventilation, along with driver-seat lumbar adjustment and memory. In back, legroom is fine (and the seat adjusts fore/aft to balance rear legroom and cargo room behind it), but in a vehicle with the dual-pane sunroof, headroom was barely sufficient even for my 5'9 frame." -- Consumer Guide (2019)
  • "The interior hasn't changed much, and that's a good thing. The design is rugged, while offering comfortable seats and headroom for all but the tallest of drivers." -- CNET (2019)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Cherokee include a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and the Uconnect infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen, a six-speaker stereo, a USB port, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay.

The Uconnect system works well. The driver can easily reach the touch screen, which responds quickly to inputs. The interface is user-friendly, and all of the center-stack controls are well-organized.

Available features include a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, and an upgraded infotainment system with an 8.4-inch touch screen, navigation, satellite radio, a nine-speaker Alpine audio system, and additional USB ports.

Available active safety features include lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and parallel and perpendicular park assist.

  • "For the most part, Jeep's 2020 Cherokee has a modern interior with logically laid-out instruments and easy-to-reach controls." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Audio controls are mounted high within easy reach (and include volume and tuning knobs), and both the standard 7-inch and available 8.4-inch UConnect infotainment systems are among the easiest of their kind to use." -- Consumer Guide (2019)
  • "Jeep's Uconnect infotainment system gets a bit of an upgrade in terms of resolution and graphics, maintaining its spot as one of the best interfaces on the market. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on both the base 7-inch or optional 8.4-inch touchscreen, the latter of which now has pinch-to-zoom capability." -- CNET (2019)

The Cherokee provides 25.8 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up and 54.7 cubic feet with them folded. You can lower the cargo floor to increase space behind the rear seats to 27.6 cubes. Most other compact SUV rivals have more cargo room. A power liftgate and a hands-free power liftgate are available.

  • … even though the Cherokee gets a bit more cargo space behind the rear seats for this year, up to 25.8 cubic feet from 24.6, it still falls behind competitors like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V." -- CNET (2019)
  • Besides improving the looks at the back, Jeep says it allowed them to expand the rear cargo area to 25.8 cubic feet … because moving the license plate space allowed them to pull the latch assembly farther out. It should be noted, though, that the Cherokee still doesn't have as much cargo capacity as the new 27.2-cubic-foot Compass." -- Autoblog (2019)
  • There's also a false floor, meaning you can either hide valuables under it for safekeeping, or drop the floor down for taller objects. Still, there's not nearly as much cargo space as in the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
