Is the 2019 Jeep Cherokee a Good Used SUV?

Yes, the 2019 Cherokee is a fine used compact SUV, but it doesn't have the well-rounded appeal of some vehicles in the class. Like most Jeeps, the Cherokee is an excellent off-roader. It also boasts roomy seating, user-friendly technology, and a high towing capacity for the class. However, its small cargo hold, below-average safety score, unimpressive fuel economy, and dull handling limit its appeal.

What Does Jeep's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Jeep offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles five years old or less and with fewer than 75,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Jeep extends the original new-car powertrain warranty to seven years from the original sale date or 100,000 miles. CPO vehicles also get a three-month/3,000-mile Maximum Coverage Care warranty. Additional benefits are available, including a 90-day SiriusXM satellite radio trial subscription, a CarFax vehicle history report, 24-hour towing and roadside assistance, and a car rental allowance. There are mileage and model restrictions, so read the Jeep warranty page carefully.

According to our analysis, Jeep has one of the worst CPO programs in the industry. Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, and Volkswagen all have better programs.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2019 Jeep Cherokee or 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Choosing between the Cherokee and the larger 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee will depend on what you want out of a crossover. As a midsize SUV, the Grand Cherokee has a roomier and nicer interior, as well as more cargo space. It’s available with high-powered V8 engines that you won’t find in the smaller Cherokee. However, it will likely come at a higher price, and its safety score is lower. If you're on a tighter budget, the Cherokee should suit you just fine. Both of these SUVs are capable off-roaders, so if that's what you're after, you'll be fine with either Jeep.

Which Is Better: 2019 Jeep Cherokee or 2019 Honda CR-V?

The 2019 Honda CR-V is a better compact SUV than the Jeep Cherokee in just about every measure. The Honda’s available all-wheel-drive setup isn’t off-road capable like the Cherokee’s four-wheel-drive system. However, the Honda has more cargo space, better fuel economy, and a better combination of safety and predicted reliability ratings. Unless you like the adventurous character of the Cherokee, you're better off with the CR-V.

2019 Cherokee Performance

How Does the 2019 Jeep Cherokee Drive?

The 2019 Cherokee comes standard with an underpowered four-cylinder engine. It struggle to get this Jeep up to speed, so you’ll want to opt for one of the two available engines. A V6 and a new-for-2019 turbocharged four-cylinder engine have nearly identical power outputs, and you can't go wrong with either. The turbo-four is more fuel-efficient, while the V6 offers a higher towing capacity.

The Cherokee delivers a smooth, comfortable ride on even pavement. It's not particularly agile or sporty, however, as it exhibits some body roll around corners. The steering is also on the numb side, providing little feedback from the road.

  • Base engine: 180-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder
  • Available engines:
    • 271-horsepower 3.2-liter V6
    • 270-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder
  • Drivetrain: standard front-wheel drive; available four-wheel drive
  • Transmission: nine-speed automatic transmission
Does the 2019 Jeep Cherokee Get Good Gas Mileage?

The Cherokee's EPA-estimated fuel economy is below average for the class. Models equipped with the turbocharged engine return the best ratings of the bunch, while the V6 delivers the worst. Four-wheel drive lowers fuel economy.

  • Turbocharged four-cylinder, FWD: 23/31 mpg city/highway
  • Four-cylinder, FWD: 22/31 mpg
  • Turbocharged four-cylinder, 4WD: 21/29 mpg
  • V6, FWD: 20/29 mpg
  • V6, 4WD: 19/27 mpg
2019 Jeep Cherokee Towing Capacity

The Cherokee can tow up to 4,500 pounds when properly equipped, which is the highest value among compact SUVs.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Off-Roading

Jeep offers three four-wheel-drive systems in the Cherokee, and availability varies by trim level. Jeep Active Drive I automatically engages when needed without input from the driver. The Active Drive II setup comes with a raised off-road suspension and lockable driveshafts with low-range gearing.

For the best off-roading prowess, look to the Cherokee Trailhawk and its exclusive Jeep Active Drive Lock setup. The Trailhawk builds on the Active Drive II system by adding a locking rear differential. Every four-wheel-drive model employs the Selec-Terrain feature, which allows you to adjust the system for scenarios including Snow, and Sand/Mud for the best off-road performance. The Jeep Active Drive Lock system adds Rock mode to Selec-Terrain.

How Many People Does the 2019 Cherokee Seat?

The 2019 Cherokee seats five people in two rows. There’s a good amount of space in the front seats and sufficient legroom for adults in the second row. However, models with the available panoramic sunroof come up a little short on headroom, especially for taller people.

Standard seating features:

  • Cloth upholstery
  • Six-way manually adjustable front seats

Available seating features:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Nappa leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats
  • Ventilated front seats
  • Eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat
  • Power-adjustable passenger seat
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Driver's seat memory settings
  • Heated steering wheel
How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2019 Jeep Cherokee?

The 2019 Cherokee has two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors for the rear outboard seats. The rear middle seat has a tether anchor and one lower anchor, and it can borrow a lower anchor connection from the rear driver-side seat.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the highest rating of Good+ for ease of use. The "+" indicates that the system is among the easiest to use.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Features

The Cherokee comes standard with the user-friendly Uconnect infotainment system with either a 7- or 8.4-inch touch screen. Both versions have sharp graphics, simple menus, and quick processing times. They also react to common smartphone gestures such as swiping and pinching to zoom.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 7-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a USB port, and a six-speaker stereo
  • Available infotainment features: an 8.4-inch touch screen, navigation, satellite radio, additional USB ports, and a nine-speaker Alpine premium stereo
  • Other available features: remote start, proximity keyless entry, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster display, and a universal garage door opener
