2009 XJR Review

Note: This review was created when the 2009 XJR was new.

The 2009 Jaguar XJR is powerful, well-sorted and all-around classy.

2009 XJR Overview

Model Overview

The Jaguar XJR is a performance-tuned variant of the Jaguar XJ, which ranks low in the class of super luxury cars, but garners praise for its balanced handling dynamics and classy interior finish.

Boasting a 400-horsepower supercharged V8 engine and performance tuning, the XJR builds on the base trim with enhanced performance abilities. Though few reviewers have test driven the XJR, they have great things to say. Road and Track writes, "A supercharger ups the output of the XJR's 4.2-liter V-8 engine to 400 horsepower, giving the sedan exhilarating performance."

The 2009 XJR's engine is mated to a six-speed ZF automatic transmission.

  • "Stately, elegant and maybe a little stuffy, the 2009 Jaguar XJ is everything a proper British motorcar should be. With its combination of modern construction and traditional styling, the XJ covers ground with appropriate dignity and real sporting spirit." -- Edmunds

The Bottom Line

With 400 horses of power and classy old-world elegance, the 2009 Jaguar XJR is prestigious. What's more, it's less expensive than its BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class counterparts.

Performance Dynamics

The XJR hasn't been extensively tested by auto critics. However, those that have test driven it report that it's powerful and well composed.

The XJR features a supercharged 4.2-liter V8 engine that produces 400 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 413 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. A six-speed ZF automatic transmission is standard. The EPA reports that the XJR nets a city/highway fuel economy of 15/22 mpg.

The rear-wheel drive XJR features a road-speed sensitive, variable-ratio, and variable-assist steering system. Also standard is Jaguar's Computer Active Technology Suspension (CATS), which automatically and continually adjusts the XJR's shock absorber settings to maintain optimum balance.

Stopping the XKR is an R performance braking system with an Anti-lock Braking System. Dynamic Stability Control and Traction Control improve directional stability during hard cornering and adverse driving conditions.

  • "Buyers who opt for the XJR or Super V8 receive a supercharged version of the engine. Rated at 400 horsepower, it delivers acceleration and performance completely in keeping with the expectations for a world-class high-performance sedan." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "With the supercharged engine, it's practically a hurricane as power surges forth effortlessly. In both versions, however, the six-speed auto is a little too eager to fling itself into 6th gear (presumably for fuel economy), requiring frequent downshifts." -- Edmunds
  • "Externally, 20-in. alloy wheels are the only thing that differentiates the XJR from the XJ8. Underneath, though, more powerful R brakes and performance R-tuned CATS electronic suspension give the already well-behaved car even better handling in keeping with the performance." -- Road and Track
