Which Model Year of the Jaguar XJ Is Best?

The 2017 Jaguar XJ is part of a generation that debuted for the 2011 model year. There have been some notable changes over the years. For the 2013 XJ, Jaguar added a new base engine and transmission and made all-wheel drive and a new limited-edition Ultimate trim available. It also revised the infotainment and stereo systems. Which Used Jaguar XJ Model Is Right for Me?

The 2017 Jaguar XJ comes in six main trim levels: XJ R-Sport, XJ Supercharged, XJL Portfolio, XJL Supercharged, XJR, and XJR LWB. Unless you're set on a long-wheelbase model, the base XJ R-Sport should be sufficient for most shoppers. It comes standard with an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system, navigation, a 20-speaker Meridian audio system, Bluetooth, satellite radio, HD Radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, two USB ports, a proximity key, push-button start, 19-inch alloy wheels, leather seats, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, a moonroof, eight-way power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a power trunk lid. Standard advanced safety features include a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, traffic sign detection, automatic high beams, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

The XJ Supercharged trim has larger 20-inch alloy wheels, four-zone automatic climate control, a retuned suspension, active differential control, and 14-way power-adjustable and massaging front seats. The XJR trim adds a sport-tuned suspension, a sport exhaust system, sport-themed styling, and performance seats.

Those looking for a long-wheelbase model will have to step up to at least the XJL Portfolio trim. It comes with nearly all the XJ R-Sport's features as well as four-zone automatic climate control, 14-way power-adjustable and massaging front seats, and upgraded leather upholstery. Two other long-wheelbase models are available. The XJL Supercharged trim adds larger 20-inch alloy wheels, a retuned suspension, and active differential control. The XJR LWB trim adds similar features as the XJR trim.

When the XJ was new, Jaguar offered several available packages, so some trims may come with more than their standard features.

Certified Pre-Owned Jaguar XJ Warranty

Though Jaguar has a below-average CPO program, some drivers may still prefer the security of a certified pre-owned XJ. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Jaguar extends the original new-car warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles. Every CPO Jaguar must pass a 165-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Jaguar warranty page carefully.

2017 Jaguar XJ Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2017 Jaguar XJ or 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has some of the highest ownership costs in its class, but if you can foot the bill, it's a far superior choice than the XJ. The S-Class has one of the most refined cabins in the segment, with high-quality materials such as leather upholstery and wood accents throughout. You’ll also get more updated tech features and slightly higher predicted reliability with the S-Class. Additionally, this smooth-riding Mercedes has an even more potent engine lineup than the Jaguar.

Which Is Better: 2017 Jaguar XJ or 2017 Audi A8?

The XJ and the 2017 Audi A8 are similarly ranked and similar overall, with a few notable differences. The A8 has slightly higher fuel economy estimates, a more luxurious cabin, and a lower average list price than the XJ, while the XJ has a larger trunk and a higher predicted reliability rating. Both vehicles have strong engines and agile handling, but they also suffer from outdated infotainment systems. Choosing between the two comes down to personal preference.

2017 XJ Performance

How Does the 2017 Jaguar XJ Drive?

A 340-horsepower, supercharged V6 engine powers the base 2017 Jaguar XJ. Upper trim levels feature a 470- or 550-horsepower, supercharged V8. The base V6 delivers quick acceleration off the line and has no problem moving the XJ along. If you're craving more power, however, either V8 engine will more than satisfy.

The XJ’s ride is both comfortable and agile. Its standard suspension system is firm enough to provide a thrilling ride over twisting back roads and comfortable enough for a relatively smooth ride over rough terrain. Rear-wheel drive and a responsive, smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission are standard. All-wheel drive is available.

Does the 2017 Jaguar XJ Get Good Gas Mileage?

The base 2017 Jaguar XJ delivers 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, which are roughly average estimates in the class.
