2016 Jaguar XJ Overview

Is the 2016 Jaguar XJ a Good Used Car?

The Jaguar XJ is a good used car. It rides smoothly over rough pavement, its supercharged engines pack a serious punch, and its interior is roomy and comfortable. The XJ is also one of the least-expensive used cars to buy and maintain in this class. That said, the Jaguar lacks the wow factor of its top competitors. Before you buy, consider alternatives like the 2016 BMW 7 Series and the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, both of which boast higher-quality interiors and even more amenities.

Which Model Year of the Jaguar XJ Is Best?

The XJ’s current generation debuted for the 2011 model year. The sedan has been regularly updated throughout this generation, but the most notable changes arrived with the 2013 and 2016 model years. The XJ gained a punchy V6 engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and available all-wheel drive for the 2013 model year. The 2016 XJ received updated exterior styling, an easier-to-use infotainment system, and additional safety features like traffic sign recognition. That added refinement makes these 2016-and-newer models the best picks in this generation.

Which Used Jaguar XJ Model Is Right for Me?

The 2016 Jaguar XJ sedan is offered in two body styles and six trim levels. The short-wheelbase models include the XJ R-Sport, XJ Supercharged, and XJR. The long-wheelbase models offer more rear legroom and include the XJL Portfolio, XJL Supercharged, and XJR LWB.

Most shoppers will be happy with the base model XJ R-Sport. It’s offered with a strong V6 engine and either rear- or all-wheel drive. It also comes packed with standard features, including an 8-inch touch screen, a navigation system, satellite radio, a CD player, USB ports, Bluetooth, blind spot monitoring, parking sensors, a rearview camera, dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, keyless entry, a moonroof, adaptive headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and alloy wheels.

The XJL Portfolio trim adds massaging front seats, four-zone climate control, and a power rear sunshade. The XJ and XJL Supercharged trims add a powerful 470-horsepower V8 engine. The XJR and XJR LWB trims have a 550-horsepower version of the same V8 and add a sport-tuned suspension and exhaust. Available features include reclining and massaging rear seats, a rear-seat entertainment system, and a suite of active safety features.

Certified Pre-Owned Jaguar XJ Warranty

You may want to consider the extra security that a certified pre-owned warranty provides. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Jaguar extends the original new-car warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles. Every CPO Jaguar must pass a 165-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Jaguar warranty page carefully. Despite this extra coverage, rivals like Lexus and Mercedes-Benz have more comprehensive CPO programs.

How Safe Is the XJ?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety did not crash test the 2016 XJ. This is not unusual for expensive luxury and sports cars. The XJ comes standard with many safety features, including a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, parking sensors, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive pivoting headlights. Available features include a 360-degree-view camera, parallel park assist, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control.

2016 Jaguar XJ Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2016 Jaguar XJ or 2016 Audi A8?

The 2016 Audi A8 has a similar appeal as the XJ. Both of these sedans are among the sportiest cars in this class, and each delivers zesty engine performance and balanced handling. The A8 has more drawbacks, though. Its infotainment system is quite outdated, and its ownership costs tend to be higher than the XJ’s. Stick with the XJ.

Which Is Better: 2016 Jaguar XJ or 2016 Jaguar XF?

The redesigned 2016 Jaguar XF is the XJ’s better – albeit smaller – sibling. The XF is just as fun to drive, but it has a nicer interior. Used models are typically less expensive to buy and maintain as well. Go with the XF.

2016 XJ Performance

How Does the 2016 Jaguar XJ Drive?

The 2016 XJ has three available supercharged engines: a 340-horsepower V6 (R-Sport and Portfolio models), a 470-horsepower V8 (Supercharged), and a 550-horsepower V8 (XJR). Each is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available for V6 models.

The V6 engine is a fine companion for the XJ. It scoots the Jaguar up to speed quickly – zero-to-60 time is around six seconds – and it provides ample punch for merging and passing on the highway. The refined eight-speed transmission deserves some of that praise too. It’s smooth, and it downshifts promptly when needed. The burly V8 engines reward with instant throttle response, and they give the XJ an even sportier driving experience, but at the cost of lower fuel economy.

With any engine, the XJ remains a pleasant car to drive. Its steering is quick and well-weighted. The car stays balanced around tight turns, and its adaptive suspension soaks up rough pavement nicely, yielding a smooth, comfortable ride.

Does the 2016 Jaguar XJ Get Good Gas Mileage?

The XJ gets decent fuel economy. The V6 engine returns 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, or 17/26 mpg city/highway with all-wheel drive. The V8 earns a lower estimate of 15/23 mpg city/highway.

2016 XJ Interior

How Many People Does the 2016 XJ Seat?

The Jaguar XJ is a four-door sedan with five seats. The front seats are cushy and supportive, and there’s ample head- and legroom for taller drivers and passengers. The rear seats are similarly comfortable, especially in the longer XJL models, which add an extra 4.8 inches of rear legroom. Heated, ventilated, and leather-trimmed front and rear seats are standard, and massaging seats are available. The XJ’s interior has an understated look, and most cabin surfaces are wrapped in soft upholstery. That said, the design feels dated compared to fresher competitors like the 2016 BMW 7 Series, and there are a few lower-quality plastics in key areas.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2016 Jaguar XJ?

The XJ has two full sets of LATCH connectors for securing child car seats.

2016 Jaguar XJ Features

Every XJ model comes loaded with standard features. These include an 8-inch touch screen, a navigation system, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a Wi-Fi hot spot, USB ports, satellite radio, and a rich-sounding 17-speaker Meridian sound system. Available features include 10.2-inch touch screens for back-seat passengers. Jaguar’s InControl Touch infotainment system boasts crisp graphics as well as simple icons and menus. It’s a little slow to respond to inputs though, and it doesn’t feel as effortless to use as other systems in this class.
