2014 Jaguar XJ Overview

Is the 2014 Jaguar XJ a Good Used Car?

The 2014 Jaguar XJ isn’t a top pick if you’re shopping for a used super luxury car. The Jag does have confident driving dynamics and powerful engines, and used models are typically some of the most affordable vehicles in the class. However, rivals like the Porsche Panamera and BMW 7 Series have far fewer drawbacks. The XJ trails its competitors with a lower-quality interior and an outdated infotainment system. It also lacks a number of advanced safety features that have become common in this class, such as auto emergency braking.

Used 2014 Jaguar XJ Performance and Interior

The Jaguar XJ is available with three supercharged engines. Base models are outfitted with a 340-horsepower V6. The XJ Supercharged gets a 470-horsepower V8, and the racy XJR shares a pumped-up version of this engine with 550 horsepower. All are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that enables brisk gearshifts. Rear-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is available (V6 models only).

The V6 is more than capable of hustling the Jag up to speed quickly, and the XJ also delivers a respectable fuel economy rating of 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway (16/24 mpg city/highway with AWD). It’s the V8 models that provide sports-car-like acceleration, albeit at the cost of lower fuel efficiency (15/23 mpg city/highway). Regardless of engine, the XJ feels sharp and athletic. Its adaptive suspension keeps the big sedan planted and composed through tight corners, yet it still soaks up bumps well and provides a comfortable ride.

The Jaguar XJ seats five and features an elegantly styled cabin with wide expanses of soft leather. Its front seats are comfortable, spacious, and nicely contoured. The rear seats in standard-wheelbase XJ models offer decent head- and legroom. Long-wheelbase XJL models add a generous 5.1 inches of rear legroom. Heated front and rear seats are standard; ventilated and massaging seats are available. That said, while interior quality is fine, it doesn’t measure up against top competitors in this class, due in part to some lower-quality trim and dashboard plastics. The XJ has a decent 15.2 cubic feet of trunk space.

Jaguar equips all XJ models with a standard 8-inch touch screen, a navigation system, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and a rich Meridian sound system. There are some neat tech touches, including the JaguarDrive gear knob, which rises gracefully from the center console upon startup. Ultimately, however, the car’s infotainment system disappoints with its clunky – and often slow – operation. Inputting navigation destinations is much trickier on Jaguar’s touch screen than on BMW’s iDrive or Audi’s MMI systems.

How Safe Is the XJ?

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety have published crash test results for the 2014 Jaguar XJ. Still, Jaguar offers the XJ with a number of advanced safety features. All models are equipped with front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and blind spot monitoring. Available features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and adaptive headlights that pivot around corners.

Should I Consider Another Used XJ?

The 2014 Jaguar XJ marks the fourth model year of the vehicle’s current generation. Updates for 2014 include a new high-performance XJR trim (which replaces the 2013 XJ Supersport), larger 10.2-inch display screens with the Rear Seat Entertainment package, and an available 26-speaker Meridian sound system. However, since there were no major changes to the standard features, you may want to consider buying a used 2013 model to save money. Notably, 2012 XJ models weren’t available with V6 engines or all-wheel drive.

The XJL Portfolio trim adds heated and ventilated seats (front and rear), four-zone climate control, and rear sunblinds. The XJ Supercharged trim adds an upgraded sound system. 2014 Jaguar XJ and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Jaguar XJ or 2014 Jaguar XF?

The midsize luxury Jaguar XF is a lot like its larger XJ sibling – for better or worse. Both Jaguars have fun-to-drive handling, zesty engines with up to 550 horsepower, average reliability ratings, and many of the same features. Unfortunately, both also have clunky touch screens. The XF has a larger trunk and often costs much less than the XJ. The XJ, however, has roomier rear seats.

Which Is Better: 2014 Jaguar XJ or 2014 Audi A8?

The 2014 Audi A8 rivals the XJ with spry handling and an average reliability rating. But it’s the A8 that takes the advantage from there. The Audi offers a much nicer interior, an easier-to-use infotainment system, more safety features like night vision with pedestrian detection, and all-wheel drive as standard in all models. Used A8 models are typically a bit more expensive, but it’s the better luxury sedan.

Which Is Better: 2014 Jaguar XJ or 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

The fully redesigned 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class lives up to far higher luxury standards than the Jaguar XJ. While it’s not quite as athletic, the S-Class delivers a silky smooth ride, unmatched interior quality, more tech and safety features, and a vast trunk. Just be aware that used models are often substantially more expensive than comparable XJ sedans.
