2020 Jaguar XF Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.3

The 2020 Jaguar XF looks and feels like a luxury car, with handsome styling and plenty of quality materials. That said, it doesn't quite reach the upper echelon of luxury that you'll find in some competitors, particularly from German brands like Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

Both rows of seats are comfortable and roomy enough for adult passengers, and the XF has more cargo space than almost every competitor. There are plenty of standard and available tech features, including an infotainment system that's user-friendly, if a little slow at times.

  • "Interior switches lack the quality of some competitors." -- Edmunds
  • "Jaguar has never had any trouble upholstering a cabin, and the XF's is again second to none. There are 11 types of cabin decor and five grades of leather. That's matched on the outside by 17 paint colors and 11 choices for wheels. This should help the Jag stand apart from the crowd of BMW 5 Series and Audi A6s, even if the overall design is conservative." -- Automobile Magazine (2016)
  • "The dashboard is surrounded by a rim that wraps around the interior, creating a cockpit-like feel. All around, high quality material and surfaces abound. Metallic finishes with tactile textures dress panels, and leather is used liberally to wrap protrusions." -- Autotrader (2016)

Seating

The five-seat XF comes standard with Jaguar's Luxtec synthetic leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and two full sets of LATCH car-seat connectors. Leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The front seats are roomy and comfortable, and they remain supportive even after lengthy drives. The only knock here is that the XF doesn't offer the high-end options you can find in some rivals, such as massaging seats. The rear quarters have plenty of head- and legroom, and three adults can sit back there on shorter drives with no issues.

  • "Front and rear headroom are comparable to most in the segment. Plenty of lateral space for all outboard passengers to get cozy. Three adults in the backseat isn't such a bad proposition, at least for a short period of time." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Supremely comfortable seats with visible stitching on the leather edges offer support and power adjustment. As befits a performance car, the seating position is low and precisely aligned with the controls. Thanks to a wheelbase longer than the first generation's, rear passengers benefit from ample legroom, yet the coupelike profile doesn't encroach on headroom, even for tall adults." -- Autotrader (2017)
  • "The XF supplies more space than the XE, and to a large degree this is what you're paying extra for. Up front, comfort is excellent, lacking only a massaging function to achieve perfection. Still, this car feels smaller inside than key competitors." -- New York Daily News (2017)

Interior Features

Standard features in the XF include dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, and emergency brake assist. The standard InControl Touch infotainment system comes with a 10-inch touch screen, an 11-speaker Meridian audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Available features include quad-zone automatic climate control, navigation, satellite radio, HD Radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and a 17-speaker Meridian audio system. There's also long list of available safety upgrades in the XF: adaptive cruise control, a surround-view parking camera system, traffic sign recognition, a head-up display, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, park assist, side parking sensors, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, driver drowsiness monitoring, and automatic emergency braking.

The InControl infotainment system features physical controls in addition to the touch screen, giving you multiple ways to adjust settings. Overall, the system is user-friendly, and it doesn't take a ton of time to master. The display is easy to see and read, but the system is occasionally slow to respond to inputs.

  • "The touchscreen infotainment layout is logical and easy to use. Hard buttons bordering the interface offer some redundant controls and are a welcome alternative. We've had issues with Jaguar's infotainment systems, however – they can be slow to respond and occasionally glitchy." -- Edmunds
  • "What's most concerning about the Jaguar XF, though, is its technological complexity. Before I drove it anywhere, I spent half an hour setting the car up using the driver information display menus, the various InControl Touch Pro functions, and the owner's manual – and I still wasn't convinced I'd covered all of the bases." -- New York Daily News (2017)
  • "The big InControl Touch Pro system takes center stage, offering most functions through its touch-screen interface. That could be a problem, but the big screen and easy-to-see icons make using it simple." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

Cargo

The XF sedan gives you 19.1 cubic feet of trunk space, which is the highest total in the luxury midsize car class. if you opt for a spare tire, that capacity drops to 17.8 cubic feet (still an excellent total). The wide trunk opening makes it easy to load your cargo, and the rear seat folds down to provide extra room if you need it. However, some may find the trunk to be on the narrow side. A hands-free trunk lid is available.

The XF Sportbrake wagon has much more cargo space than the sedan. It provides 31.7 cubic feet of room behind the rear seats and 69.7 cubic feet with them folded down. A hands-free power liftgate is standard in this body style.

  • "The trunk space is wide and deep, and gooseneck trunklid arms are recessed so as not to impede cargo loading. The pass-through size is average, as are the number and depth of interior nooks." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "… interior storage space is limited, and while the trunk is deep it is also unexpectedly narrow." -- New York Daily News (2017)
