2017 Jaguar XF Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Jaguar XF was new.

Interior: 7.9

Jaguar approaches its interior with proper British gentility. The 2017 XF's cabin is opulent and stately, without coming across as busy. Materials are of the highest quality, with a wealth of leather choices, interior trim offerings of carbon fiber and burr walnut, and spacious, comfortable seats. The large touch screen is handsome, but its interface is complicated.

  • "Top-quality materials and finishes extend throughout the interior, as befits a car in this class." -- Edmunds
  • "As good as the XF looks from the outside, slipping into the driver's seat evokes another level of feeling, and that's luxury. Supremely comfortable seats with visible stitching on the leather edges offer support and power adjustment. As befits a performance car, the seating position is low and precisely aligned with the controls." -- Autotrader (2016)
  • "Jaguar has never had any trouble upholstering a cabin, and the XF's is again second to none. There are 11 types of cabin decor and five grades of leather. That's matched on the outside by 17 paint colors and 11 choices for wheels. This should help the Jag stand apart from the crowd of BMW 5 Series and Audi A6s, even if the overall design is conservative." -- Automobile Magazine (2016)

Jaguar upholsters the five seats in the 2017 XF with its synthetic leather, called Luxtec. Leather upholstery is also available, along with heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a power sunshade for the rear window, and manual sunshades for the rear side windows. All but the base model come with memory settings for the driver's seat and a folding rear seat that has a 40/20/40 split.

Tall travelers can ride comfortably all day in both the front and back seat of the XF, which boasts ample headroom all-around and a stretch-worthy amount of space for your legs. You have to upgrade beyond the base trim level if you want to be pampered with amenities like leather upholstery or rear seatbacks that fold down, but otherwise, the XF has few shortcomings with regard to passenger accommodations.

  • "Cabin space is also on par, offering taller rear seat passengers a little more headroom than the Audi A6, for example, all while maintaining the XF's sleek, low-roof look." -- Edmunds
  • "The XF supplies more space than the XE, and to a large degree this is what you're paying extra for. Up front, comfort is excellent, lacking only a massaging function to achieve perfection." -- New York Daily News
  • "Of course, the XF is a larger, less wieldy package and the payback is far more rear-seat room than both XE and the last-gen XF. That's despite the XF being a quarter-inch shorter and an eighth of an inch lower than its predecessor. Clever packaging and a 2-inch wheelbase-stretch equals an inch more kneeroom, a half-inch more legroom, and an inch extra headroom. It's a comfortable place for 6-foot-tall adults to spend a long journey." -- Autoweek (2016)

Interior Features

For 2017, the base Jaguar XF offers a little less than it did the year before. Standard features include an 11-speaker Meridian sound system, Bluetooth connectivity, HD Radio, push-button start, and emergency brake assist. The infotainment system – Jaguar InControl Touch – features an 8-inch touch screen and a USB port. There are few redundant buttons surrounding the display, which gives the XF a clean layout, though it also means that you must use the screen to change many settings. Reviews are mixed on the usability of the interface, and the XF's system is more complicated than most.

Though the base XF is a little light on standard features, Jaguar still offers an extensive list of options, including InControl Touch Pro (which comes with a 10.2-inch touch screen), a 12.3-inch driver display in the gauge cluster, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a 17-speaker Meridian digital surround-sound system, quad-zone automatic climate control, a head-up display, soft door close, a 360-degree camera system, traffic sign recognition and intelligent speed limiter, adaptive cruise control with stop-start functionality, and parking sensors on the front, sides, and rear.

  • "Here the XF falls a bit short, its infotainment system lacking the speed and refinement of rival systems. The screen, controls and menu buttons are easy to use, but we found the system's responses slow, and the navigation froze up a few times during our testing. InControl Touch also does not yet support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. We're also a bit disappointed with the 3G Internet connection, given the increasing availability of 4G connections in today's vehicles." -- Edmunds
  • "The big InControl Touch Pro system takes center stage, offering most functions through its touch-screen interface. That could be a problem, but the big screen and easy-to-see icons make using it simple." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "InControl Touch Pro, though, would regularly drive me crazy. I do not find it to be intuitive, and in my test car the system simply did not work as expected - or simply did not work. Plus, it lacks volume and tuning knobs, unnecessary omissions that always cause frustration." -- New York Daily News

The 2017 Jaguar XF has one of the largest trunks among luxury midsize sedans, measuring 19.1 cubic feet. You can't expand cargo space in the base model, but all other trim levels feature a folding back seat with a 40/20/40 split. A power trunk is also available. Small item storage in the cabin comes up short in comparison to some rivals.

  • "Trunk space is abundant at 19.1 cubic feet, a number that makes it tops in its class. With a wide and deep enclosure, you won't have much trouble fitting luggage, golf clubs, strollers or the take from a monthly wholesale warehouse supply run. A split-folding rear seatback with a pass-through door allows for easy transport of longer items." -- Edmunds
  • " … this car feels smaller inside than key competitors, interior storage space is limited, and while the trunk is deep it is also unexpectedly narrow." -- New York Daily News
