2017 Jaguar XF Review

The 2017 Jaguar XF is the only luxury midsize car with a standard turbodiesel engine, but it does little to distinguish itself beyond that. It also lacks some basic features and has a frustrating infotainment system, which sink it to the bottom half of the class.

Pros & Cons

  • Fuel-efficient turbodiesel engine
  • Few standard active safety features
  • Overly complicated infotainment system

2017 Jaguar XF Overview

Is the 2017 Jaguar XF a Good Used Car?

Overall, the 2017 XF is a good used luxury midsize car. It has the best fuel economy numbers among nonhybrid classmates, and more cargo space than its rivals offer. However, the problem is that so many of the XF’s rivals are better. This Jaguar lacks a standard rearview camera. Meanwhile, competitors like the 2017 Genesis G80 have active safety features like standard lane keep assist, lane change assist, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control.

How Much Does the 2017 Jaguar XF Cost to Own?

Five-year costs for gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs for the 2017 Jaguar XF are estimated to be $28,109. That’s slightly below average for a luxury midsize car.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New XF?

The 2018 Jaguar XF has a starting price of $47,775, which is about $5,000 more than the average price of a used 2017 XF. Changes for 2018 include the introduction of a less powerful base turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine, which has considerably worse fuel economy than the diesel engine. However, a new wagon version debuted for 2018. If these changes don’t entice you, consider a used 2017 Jag instead. You’ll save money if you do.

There are two good new luxury midsize cars that will cost you less than an average-priced XF. The 2018 Genesis G80 has a starting price of $41,750. It boasts a long list of standard features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio, and adaptive cruise control. The G80 also has more front-row legroom than the XF. At $33,000, the 2019 Acura TLX is much less expensive than the XF, but it can’t match the Jag’s handling ability and fuel efficiency.

Which Model Year of the Jaguar XF Is Best?

Jaguar redesigned the XF for 2016. The 2016 XF saw an increase in cargo and passenger space, the introduction of a larger touch screen, and more available driver assistance features. For 2017, Jaguar introduced the diesel engine and reduced the number of standard features. Both the 2016 and 2017 XF are good choices.

Earlier models of the XF might also be worth a look. The 2015 XF was the first model with standard navigation, a rearview camera, and a Meridian audio system. The 2013 XF introduced a standard turbocharged four-cylinder base engine and an available supercharged V6. You’ll save money buying a 2013, 2014, or 2015 XF. However, these models don’t have the benefits of the 2016 redesign.

2017 Jaguar XF Recalls

As of this writing, the 2017 Jaguar XF has two open recalls. The first deals with a cracked sill panel that may cause a ruptured fuel line and lead to a fire. The second recall is for the instrument cluster, which may go blank while driving. Be sure both of these recalls are addressed before buying the XF.

Which Used Jaguar XF Model Is Right for Me?

The 2017 Jaguar XF is available in five trim levels: XF, XF Premium, XF Prestige, XF R-Sport, and XF S. For most trims, buyers have a choice between the standard engine – a turbocharged four-cylinder diesel – and a supercharged six-cylinder gasoline engine. All-wheel drive is available with any trim. The base XF offers an 8-inch touch screen, an 11-speaker Meridian sound system, a USB port, Bluetooth, HD Radio, keyless entry, and push-button start.

We recommend stepping up to the XF Premium trim. It adds a rearview camera, memory settings for the driver's seat, and a folding rear seat with a 40/20/40-split. The XF Prestige trim comes with navigation, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, proximity key entry, and enhanced smartphone integration through InControl Apps.

Performance-minded shoppers should consider the R-Sport and S trims. The XF R-Sport has a stiffer sport suspension, interior aluminum trim, satellite radio, and a driver attention monitor. The XF S is the ultimate performance model in the XF family with its 380-horsepower supercharged V6 engine and an adaptive suspension that responds to changing road conditions and even allows you to customize driving dynamics. The XF S also comes with leather-trimmed sport seats and red brake calipers.

What Does Jaguar's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Jaguar offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles five years old or less and with fewer than 60,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Jaguar extends the original new-car warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles. Every CPO Jaguar must pass a 165-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing, roadside assistance, and trip interruption benefits may be available, so read the Jaguar warranty page carefully.

Jaguar has one of the best CPO programs in the industry, according to our analysis. Lexus is one of the very few that offers a better program.

2017 Jaguar XF Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2017 Jaguar XF or 2017 Audi A6?

The 2017 Audi A6 has the edge over the Jaguar XF in almost all areas, except fuel economy. The XF has a more fuel-efficient standard diesel engine that returns 31 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway, which is better than the 24/34 mpg rating for the Audi. However, the A6 has more horsepower and a better infotainment system than the Jaguar. The A6 also comes with more standard features, including tri-zone automatic climate control, satellite radio, a 5-inch driver information display, and a rearview camera. Overall, the Audi is a better choice for most buyers.

Which Is Better: 2017 Jaguar XF or 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

The 2017 XF’s 180-horsepower diesel engine is no match for the base engine in the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, a 241-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder. However, the base XF has much better fuel economy (31/42 mpg city/highway) than the base E-Class (22/30 mpg city/highway). The E-Class is a heavy hitter when it comes to tech features. Its COMAND infotainment system serves many purposes, and it has neatly arranged controls around the central 12.3-inch screen. The XF's base 8-inch touch screen can't compete. Overall, the E-Class is the better choice.

The latter provides an exhilarating amount of power, but the XF S model has the highest engine output: 380 horsepower. All three engines use a fast-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission.

Does the 2017 Jaguar XF Get Good Gas Mileage?
