2020 Jaguar I-Pace Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 6.4

The 2020 Jaguar I-Pace has a sumptuous, quiet cabin. The interior showcases sophisticated styling and high-end materials, such as aluminum and wood accents. The seats are mostly spacious and comfortable, and the I-Pace has a good amount of cargo space. Still, some rival brands like Audi and Porsche offer a higher level of interior luxury. There are plenty of technology features in this EV crossover, but its infotainment system is glitchy and slow. The I-Pace also comes equipped with about a dozen advanced driver assistance features.

  • "This very accommodating interior is attractive, comfortable and spacious." -- Edmunds
  • With its stitched leather seats and dashboard, flat and knurled aluminum accents, wood trim, and full glass roof and lengthy (if narrow) greenhouse, the I-Pace interior feels at once premium and accessible. It doesn't reach Mercedes or even Porsche levels of detail and quality, but it also doesn't attempt to suggest that the cost-cutting parsimoniousness of cheap materials is a virtue, like Tesla." -- Autoblog (2019)
  • "The cabin layout is fresh and luxurious, doing a masterful job of integrating high-tech touchscreen interfaces with traditional controls. When it comes to materials and craftsmanship, there's more than a dollop of luxury touches, as you expect from a British marque like Jaguar. Rather than having an ultra-modern stark layout dominated by a center screen, a look favored by Tesla, the I-Pace speaks of a more traditional approach to the cabin by an established manufacturer with a long history." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)

Seating

The I-Pace is a two-row luxury SUV with five seats. Synthetic leather upholstery and eight-way power-adjustable front seats are standard. Genuine leather, seating position memory settings, 10- and 18-way power adjustable front seats, heated front and rear seats, cooled front seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The cabin is a pleasant place to be, even on lengthy rides. The two spacious rows of seats offer a good amount of support. There’s a hidden shelf mounted beneath the rear seats, and it’s perfect for storing small tablets and laptops. That said, both rows of seats are mounted pretty low, which may be problematic for long-legged occupants or drivers who want a commanding view of the road.

  • "Both front and rear seats are nicely shaped and comfortable, even on longer drives. And to help you enjoy all that comfort, the I-Pace is commendably quiet, even at freeway speeds." -- Edmunds
  • "The seats, too, offer just the right balance of support and suppleness, while potent heating and cooling will keep your bottom properly regulated. Rear passengers receive similarly plush accommodations, with the added benefit of a hidden shelf beneath their seats perfect for iPads or compact laptops. Headroom is generous front or rear, bolstered by the tinted glass roof that also creates an incredibly light, open feel." -- CNET (2019)
  • In practice, the back seat has more than enough headroom despite the panoramic glass roof, but the seat itself is mounted a wee bit low for ideal comfort. It's better than the rock-bottom BMW X4's, but is comparable to other SUV/coupe creations. Up front, the seats demonstrate ample adjustability range, and although they're mounted a bit higher than a typical car's, and definitely a typical Jaguar's, the driving position is not what one would call 'commanding.'" -- Autoblog (2019)

Interior Features

The 2020 Jaguar I-Pace's standard dual-display infotainment system features smartphone integration, a Meridian sound system, satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth, six USB ports, and a navigation system. The I-Pace also comes standard with a customizable gauge cluster, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, a proximity key, and three 12-volt power outlets.

The infotainment system has a modern design and a number of convenient functions, but it isn’t perfect. It can be extremely slow to start up and respond to user inputs, and the complicated menu structure can take some time to learn. Optional features include quad-zone automatic climate control, an activity key, a heated windshield with heated washer jets, and a 15-speaker Meridian sound system.

Standard safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, parallel and perpendicular park assist, a rearview camera, parking sensors on all sides, rear cross traffic alert, a clear exit monitor, lane keep assist, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a driver condition monitor, and traffic sign recognition.

Available safety features include blind spot monitoring, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, adaptive cruise control with steering assist, high-speed automatic emergency braking, and a surround-view parking camera system.

  • There are small fiddly deficiencies here and there, but most people will not be bothered by them. Our only real technical complaint involves the lag time in both touchscreen response and the backup camera image." -- Edmunds
  • "The conventional center console concentrates most controls in two screens: a main 10.0-inch unit on top and a lower 5.5-inch screen primarily used for climate functions. These follow in recent Jaguar tradition by being painfully slow at everything they do, from the boot-up sequence to switching tasks to responding to taps. The infotainment system, along with the telematics module and battery management software, can receive over-the-air updates from the home office, but such patches seem unlikely to deliver the much-needed responsiveness." -- Car and Driver (2019)
  • The two touchscreens are a little too slow to react to touches, but Jaguar has thankfully limited the number of menus and sub menus, and navigating the actual system, while painfully slow at times, is relatively intuitive to figure out if you are not driving at the exact moment." -- Jalopnik (2019)

Cargo

The I-Pace has a decent amount of cargo space for the luxury hybrid and electric SUV class, with 25.3 cubic feet behind the second-row seats and 51 cubic feet with those seats folded. Although the cargo area is quite deep, its narrow and sloped load deck can impede access to the space. The cabin also features a number of cubbies for stashing small items. There’s a storage compartment located beneath the front hood, but it’s rather small, measuring less than 1 cubic foot.

A power liftgate and a hands-free liftgate are available.

  • The cargo area is easy to load, but the available volume is limited to 25.3 cubic feet by the narrowness of the load deck. The compartment is uncommonly deep, though, and folding the rear seats opens up a good deal of space. The tiny front trunk doesn't add much space. Overall, cargo space is closer to what you get from a hatchback than a typical luxury SUV. " -- Edmunds
  • The cargo area is basically a really big trunk (25.3 cubic feet) as that sloped rear deck doesn't do much for versatility. It's at least a hatchback, though, which gives it an advantage over the Tesla Model 3's traditional sedan trunk. The frunk offers a token 0.95 cubic feet that's probably big enough to store a large house cat (not attempted, not recommended). Inside, the center console adopts more storage than other Jags since there isn't a driveshaft gobbling up room. This includes a main bin that offers 10 liters of space, which both Burgess and chief Jaguar designer Ian Callum separately confirmed is big 'enough to hold two wine bottles.' At least we know there's a design studio bar." -- Autoblog (2019)
