2019 Jaguar I-Pace Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 6.3

The cabin of the 2019 Jaguar I-Pace is not only supremely quiet but also elegantly styled and appointed. Materials are high quality, and though they aren't quite at the level of some rivals, most reviewers agree that they are better than what you'll find in a Tesla or Jaguar F-Pace. Seats are generally comfortable and spacious, and there's ample cargo space behind the back seat. Standard technology is impressive – both for the number of included features and for their high-tech abilities – but not all systems work flawlessly.

  • With its stitched leather seats and dashboard, flat and knurled aluminum accents, wood trim, and full glass roof and lengthy (if narrow) greenhouse, the I-Pace interior feels at once premium and accessible. It doesn't reach Mercedes or even Porsche levels of detail and quality, but it also doesn't attempt to suggest that the cost-cutting parsimoniousness of cheap materials is a virtue, like Tesla." -- Autoblog
  • "The cabin layout is fresh and luxurious, doing a masterful job of integrating high-tech touchscreen interfaces with traditional controls. When it comes to materials and craftsmanship, there's more than a dollop of luxury touches, as you expect from a British marque like Jaguar. Rather than having an ultra-modern stark layout dominated by a center screen, a look favored by Tesla, the I-Pace speaks of a more traditional approach to the cabin by an established manufacturer with a long history." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "It starts with a cabin that's beautifully designed and wrapped in the kinds of luxe materials you'll want to reach out and touch. The fuzzy Alcantara-like headliner in particular received no shortage of fondling from yours truly during my two days in the car." -- CNET

Seating

The I-Pace is a 2-row SUV with room for five people. The front seats are reasonably comfortable (eight-way power adjustment is standard), although outward visibility for the driver is poor. Passenger space is adequate in the back seat, but the cushions feel firm for some adults. Covering the well-bolstered seats is standard synthetic leather, with grained leather and Windsor leather among the available upgraded materials. Memory settings, 10- and 18-way power adjustments, heated front and rear seats, cooled front seats, and a heated steering wheel are also available.

  • "Interior space is plentiful, especially with regard to headroom. You can fit four large adults without a problem." -- Edmunds
  • "The seats, too, offer just the right balance of support and suppleness, while potent heating and cooling will keep your bottom properly regulated. Rear passengers receive similarly plush accommodations, with the added benefit of a hidden shelf beneath their seats perfect for iPads or compact laptops. Headroom is generous front or rear, bolstered by the tinted glass roof that also creates an incredibly light, open feel." -- CNET
  • In practice, the back seat has more than enough headroom despite the panoramic glass roof, but the seat itself is mounted a wee bit low for ideal comfort. It's better than the rock-bottom BMW X4's, but is comparable to other SUV/coupe creations. Up front, the seats demonstrate ample adjustability range, and although they're mounted a bit higher than a typical car's, and definitely a typical Jaguar's, the driving position is not what one would call 'commanding.'" -- Autoblog

Interior Features

On paper, the I-Pace's technology looks impressive. Every 2019 model comes with the same interface, comprising an upper and lower screen on the center stack and an oversized customizable display for the driver. Smartphone integration, a Meridian sound system, satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth, six USB ports, three 12-volt outlets, navigation, and a Wi-Fi hot spot round out the standard infotainment features.

This system doesn't always work smoothly, however. A slow response time is one of the most common complaints, and the menu layout is complicated. Usability improves once you're familiar with the interface. Useful touches include systems that adjust climate control based on the number of passengers on board and automatically locate charging stations along your route.

Additional standard features include a fixed panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, push button start, and a proximity key. The I-Pace's lengthy list of safety features includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, parallel and perpendicular park assist, a rearview camera, parking sensors on all sides, rear cross traffic alert, a clear exit monitor, lane keep assist, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a driver condition monitor, and traffic sign recognition.

Available options include four-zone climate control, an activity key, a heated windshield with heated washer jets, blind spot monitoring, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, adaptive cruise control with steering assist, high-speed emergency braking, and a 360-degree camera.

  • "The conventional center console concentrates most controls in two screens: a main 10.0-inch unit on top and a lower 5.5-inch screen primarily used for climate functions. These follow in recent Jaguar tradition by being painfully slow at everything they do, from the boot-up sequence to switching tasks to responding to taps. The infotainment system, along with the telematics module and battery management software, can receive over-the-air updates from the home office, but such patches seem unlikely to deliver the much-needed responsiveness." -- Car and Driver
  • The multiple displays look pretty, but navigating through the menus can feel slow and a little clunky. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are not supported, though Jaguar says that will change in the future." -- Edmunds
  • The two touchscreens are a little too slow to react to touches, but Jaguar has thankfully limited the number of menus and sub menus, and navigating the actual system, while painfully slow at times, is relatively intuitive to figure out if you are not driving at the exact moment." -- Jalopnik

Cargo

The I-Pace has 25.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seats and 51 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down, which is decent for its size. A small storage compartment is located under the front hood, and lots of cubbies are available throughout the cabin. The liftgate opens manually on the base model, and Jaguar offers a power liftgate and a hands-free liftgate for added convenience.

  • The cargo area is basically a really big trunk (25.3 cubic feet) as that sloped rear deck doesn't do much for versatility. It's at least a hatchback, though, which gives it an advantage over the Tesla Model 3's traditional sedan trunk. The frunk offers a token 0.95 cubic feet that's probably big enough to store a large house cat (not attempted, not recommended). Inside, the center console adopts more storage than other Jags since there isn't a driveshaft gobbling up room. This includes a main bin that offers 10 liters of space, which both Burgess and chief Jaguar designer Ian Callum separately confirmed is big 'enough to hold two wine bottles.' At least we know there's a design studio bar." -- Autoblog
  • Though the front trunk has negligible cargo space, overall capacity is similar to compact luxury SUVs." -- Edmunds
