2016 Jaguar F-Type Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2016 Jaguar F-Type was new.

Performance: 8.9

The 2016 Jaguar F-Type impresses auto journalists with its dynamic handling and excellent cornering ability. The base engine offers plenty of power and the more powerful available engines add to the F-Type's credibility as a dynamic sports car.

  • "The 2015 Jaguar F-Type delivers the goods, whether you're looking for stunning acceleration or entertaining handling." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "Our ride was the F-Type R Coupe. You'd be hard-pressed to find a faster, better-looking or more comfortable beast in which to fly." -- AutoWeek (2015)
  • "Driving this car briskly is intoxicating, yet even in the slow sections the F-Type managed to be fun. …" -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "Normal driving situations made the F-Type S Coupe the perfect car for everything from a milk run to a high-speed chase (in following with Jaguar's 'Villains' marketing scheme). But as we saw at Willow, the track is really where the big 5.0-liter cat shines." -- Left Lane News (2015)

Acceleration and Power

The base F-Type features a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that puts out 340 horsepower. S models feature a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 380 horsepower. A six-speed manual is standard in rear-wheel drive V6 models and an eight-speed automatic is available. All-wheel drive models are only offered with the automatic. The base F-Type gets an EPA-estimated 16/24 mpg city/highway, which is poor for the class.

The F-Type R features a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 that puts out 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. It comes with an eight-speed automatic. Jaguar reports that the F-Type R will go from zero to 60 mph in under four seconds and has a top speed of 186 mph.

The base F-Type offers plenty of power for most drivers. The S model builds on that power, making for a more fun-to-drive vehicle. However, the F-Type R really captures the driver's imagination with its track-caliber power and acceleration, as well as its intoxicating exhaust note. V6 models are now available with a manual transmission, and the eight-speed automatic delivers smooth, rapid shifts.

  • "If you're looking for ultimate straight-line performance, the lightning-fast F-Type R is the way to go, especially because now you can utilize all 550 horses from a stop thanks to traction-enhancing all-wheel drive. Plus, the V8's active exhaust produces one of the most outrageous soundtracks that an internal combustion engine can offer. Yet when you're driving with restraint in traffic, the F-Type quiets to normal, more civilized levels." -- Edmunds
  • "The base 340-horsepower V6 is pretty quick, and even better now that it comes with a 6-speed manual, but it's the supercharged V6 in the S that really makes the F-Type a joy to drive." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "60 miles per hour arrives in a manufacturer-estimated 4.8 seconds, although it feels quicker than that - 4.5 to 4.6 seconds seems a bit more reasonable. The top speed, meanwhile, is 171 mph. Despite this quickness, the F-Type is very much in the Goldilocks zone when it comes to speed - it's never so fast as to scare its driver, yet it can and will set your heart aflutter on every outing." -- Autoblog (F-Type S - 2015)
  • "Power was impressive in the S we drove but downright neck-snapping in the R (which launched from a stop as if it were fired out of a cannon), and in both cases, it flowed in a smooth, linear rush. Particularly noteworthy is that the automatic transmission downshifts with lightning speed, even under part throttle. Steering-wheel shift paddles lend a sporting touch and were a boon in the tight twisties of our drive route, but with eight gears to go through, downshifting from ‘cruising’ eighth to corner-carving second requires flipping the lever six times. And keeping count." -- Consumer Guide (2015)

Handling and Braking

Rear-wheel drive is standard on the F-Type and all-wheel drive is available (standard on R models). The F-Type offers agile handling to back up its sports car looks, according to test drivers. They note that it tackles corners with ease and exhibits little body roll or lean. The ride is quiet and smooth on the highway, but things get too bumpy on uneven road surfaces, especially when equipped with 19- or 20-inch wheels.

  • "…the car handles exceptionally well and truly succeeds at looking the part. The amazing thing is that the chassis manages to convey a proper sports-car personality, but it's far from buzzy and tiring. There's still plenty of comfort to enjoy." -- AutoTrader
  • "As for handling, the 2016 Jaguar F-Type delivers, big time. All models in the range perform on a very high level, though the V6 models feel marginally more responsive in the handling department than the heavier R. At speed on the highway, the F-Type is quiet and mostly comfortable, but on broken pavement the firm suspension has trouble soaking up rougher road imperfections. It's especially noticeable with the 19- or 20-inch wheels." -- Edmunds
  • "The 3,514-pound F-Type is a great dancer, with hardly any body roll, squat or dive. You can pitch it hard into corners and it will respond well, digging in and getting around. It feels flat, planted and mostly neutral, although it's very easy to get this car to misbehave by steering with the throttle, should the mood strike." -- Autoblog (2015)
  • "The car rocks from side to side on its suspension as the adaptive dampers and anti-roll bars snub down body roll, and while the ride is compliant, actual suspension travel feels limited. The fast-ratio, electric-assist steering feels awfully aggressive at times; we use the F-Type coupe's driver-adjustable chassis tuning to dial out the heavy steering effort when the rest of the car is in Dynamic mode." -- Automobile Magazine (2015)
