2016 Jaguar F-Type Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Jaguar F-Type was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 7.8

The 2016 Jaguar F-Type looks and feels like a sports car on the inside, critics report, but it hasn't abandoned its luxury roots either, as it features quality materials throughout the cabin. Some think the seats offer good support and headroom, but others complain that legroom and comfort are lacking. The infotainment system is slow and complex, and adjusting climate controls is tedious. The F-Type has typical cargo capacity for the class, though the space seems limited.

  • "Jaguar didn't forget it's a luxury brand, however, and there are numerous interior upgrades including a red leather package, heated steering wheel and a Suedecloth headliner." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Slide into the F-Type's driver seat and there's no mistaking it for anything but a sports car. Even in base trim, there are plenty of cues telling you that this car means business, with racy stitching, well-bolstered seats and a beefy passenger grab handle on the center console. It's still a Jaguar, though, which means top-notch materials." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "Most surfaces are padded, and while the overall look is more business-like than flashy, materials are top-notch." -- Consumer Guide (2015)
  • While the rest of the interior feels suitably luxurious, the plastic-adorned home of the climate controls, infotainment and vehicle systems is decidedly a letdown. Ignoring that qualm, it's quite clear that the F-Type's cabin is a place for the business of driving." -- Autoblog (2015)

Seating

The F-Type seats two and comes standard with suede and leather upholstery, power-adjustable seats and a heated steering wheel. Heated seats, premium leather upholstery and performance seats with added side support are available.

Some test drivers like the seats, saying that they offer good support and there is ample headroom. Others disagree, noting that legroom is limited and the seats are uncomfortable. Additionally, outward visibility is limited.

  • "Road trips in the Jag may be a bit of a hassle. Those long of leg will find the seat doesn't move far back enough…" -- Edmunds
  • "The seat's H-point (the intended location of an occupant's hip) is low and aggressive, and along with my tester's optional, two-piece performance buckets, the cockpit is plenty able to gear one up for a proper thrashing. Those optional thrones, by the way, are must-haves, offering adjustable bolstering and lumbar to deliver plenty of support without being too aggressive or uncomfortable." -- Autoblog (2015)
  • "The coupe's high roof means good headroom even for tall drivers, and there's adequate legroom, too." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "The cockpit feels confined, the driver's sight lines are troubled, and the aggressive, thinly padded sport seats are supportive but not actually comfortable." -- Automobile Magazine (2015)

Interior Features

Standard features in the F-Type include single-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof (coupe), Bluetooth, navigation, a 12-speaker Meridian audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio and Jaguar's InControl infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen, a USB port and smartphone connectivity. Vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission also feature InControl Remote, which allows you to lock or unlock the doors and start the vehicle from your smartphone.

Available features include dual-zone automatic climate control, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.

While the infotainment system has a simple, straightforward interface, it has poor response times, limited smartphone connectivity features and requires too many steps to perform some functions. Also, adjusting the climate controls can be a hassle.

  • "The infotainment touch screen's simple interface conveys what you want to know, albeit without much flair." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "Unfortunately, the F-Type's infotainment system is a letdown. It doesn't offer many smartphone connectivity features that some rivals have, and it can be slow to respond to your inputs." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • Audio controls are easy enough to figure out and reach, but most adjustments are done through a touch screen - which inevitably demands additional steps to perform simple functions - and the on/volume knob is inconveniently located on the console. Climate controls consist of simple rotary knobs for temperature and fan speed, but mode is adjusted by hitting a button that takes you to a page on the touch screen, from which you then select which outlets are activated. This last is overly tedious. …" -- Consumer Guide (2015)

Cargo

The 2016 F-Type coupe has 11 cubic feet of trunk space and the convertible has 7 cubic feet. A power trunk lid is available. While cargo capacity is not atypical for the class, auto journalists complain about the lack of room, noting that even moderately-sized cargo can be a tight fit. A high liftover height makes loading cargo more difficult.

  • "Whether you're in the coupe or the convertible, trunk size is notably limited. … Medium-size suitcases will be a tight squeeze, and the oddly shaped space and awkward liftover further complicate cargo loading." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "The F-type coupe is a serious sports car, not just a snappy ride to the airport. (Better pack light, because the cargo capacity of 11.0 cubic feet works out to be smaller than it looks.)" -- Automobile Magazine (2015)
  • "The rear hatchback raises a removable shelf that helps to keep valuables out of sight when parking the car. Although the Jaguar F-Type coupe is a perfect road-tripper for two, be sure to pack light. … Jaguar says that is sufficient to carry two golf bags, although we don't think they will be the size used by a PGA touring pro." -- Left Lane News (2015)
