2014 Jaguar F-Type Overview

Is the 2014 Jaguar F-Type a Good Used Car?

The 2014 Jaguar F-Type is a fine option if you’re shopping for a used luxury sports car, but there are better alternatives. The Jag excites with its powerful supercharged engines and focused driving dynamics, while its cozy interior, supportive seats, and user-friendly features make it a great place to sit. The F-Type might let you down on uneven pavement, however, where the ride quality borders on harsh. Additionally, its teeny trunk trails in practicality when compared to rivals such as the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette.

Used 2014 Jaguar F-Type Performance and Interior

The Jaguar F-Type comes with one of three supercharged engines. Base models are outfitted with a 340-horsepower V6. The F-Type V6 S shares a pumped-up version of this engine that puts out 380 horsepower, while the F-Type V8 S gets 495 horsepower from its V8 engine. All are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, shift paddles (for manually changing gear), and rear-wheel drive.

Both V6 engines deliver quick acceleration and immediate throttle response. The V8 shines brightest, though, with its mammoth punch of power and burbling exhaust note. The transmission fires off quick yet smooth gear shifts. All F-Types provide crisp handling and taut, playful steering. The Jag weaves sharply around corners, brakes confidently, and feels well-connected to the road. That said, the firm suspension results in a harsh ride over bumpy pavement. Fuel economy ranges from 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway with the base V6 to just 16/23 mpg with the V8.

The F-Type, a two-seat convertible, impresses with its quality cabin materials. All models benefit from rich leather upholstery and sleek metallic trim. The F-Type’s sport seats are plush, highly adjustable, and nicely contoured. The available performance seats feature larger side bolsters for extra hip-hugging support. Despite the small cabin, the Jaguar offers adequate head- and legroom for taller drivers and passengers. Outward visibility is fine with the top up. The F-Type’s power-retractable soft top can raise and lower in 12 seconds and operates at driving speeds up to 30 mph. There isn’t much interior storage space though, and the Jag’s small trunk offers just 7 cubic feet of cargo room.

Jaguar equips all F-Type roadsters with an 8-inch touch screen, navigation, Bluetooth, and a Meridian sound system. The infotainment system is easy to use, and it’s complemented by a simple button layout on the dashboard. F-Type V6 S and V8 S models are available with extra infotainment features, including a Dynamic-i menu that allows drivers to configure the car’s engine, transmission, and suspension characteristics, as well as record lap times and view telemetry data.

How Safe Is the F-Type?

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has published crash test results for the 2014 Jaguar F-Type.

Some F-Types come with a number of advanced safety features as part of an available Vision Pack. These features include parking sensors, a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive headlights that pivot around corners are also available.

Should I Consider Another Used F-Type?

The F-Type roadster debuted as an all-new model for 2014, and it eventually went on to replace the aging Jaguar XK. Used 2014 models will be the most affordable in the F-Type line, but there are good reasons to consider 2015 and 2016 models too. For the 2015 model year, a hardtop F-Type coupe variant arrived along with a higher-performance R model. The 2016 F-Type added optional all-wheel drive and a manual transmission.

Which Used Jaguar F-Type Is Right for Me?

The 2014 F-Type convertible comes in three trims. The base model has partial leather seats, an 8-inch touch screen, a navigation system, Bluetooth, remote start, and remote keyless entry.

The midlevel S trim adds a limited-slip differential, active exhaust, adaptive suspension, high-performance brakes, and proximity keyless entry. The top-of-the-line Jaguar F-Type V8 S adds dual-zone climate control, and rear parking sensors. Available features include racing-inspired performance seats, a surround-sound system, and the Vision Pack suite of advanced safety features.

You may also want to consider a certified pre-owned F-Type. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Jaguar extends the original new-car warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles. Every CPO Jaguar must pass a 165-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Jaguar warranty page carefully.

2014 Jaguar F-Type and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Jaguar F-Type or 2014 Porsche Boxster?

Like the F-Type, the 2014 Porsche Boxster boasts sharp handling, brisk acceleration, and similar used car pricing. The Boxster rises toward the top of the class, however, because it feels a bit more connected to the road, delivers a nicer ride quality, and rates higher for reliability.

Which Is Better: 2014 Jaguar F-Type or 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class?

The F-Type and the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class are both luxury sports cars, but while the Jaguar puts its emphasis on sports car agility, the SLK focuses on luxury. The SLK feels far less athletic, but it rewards with a smooth ride, more available advanced features (like forward collision warning), and a roomier trunk. The SLK also rates higher for reliability, and used models are often more affordable than used F-Types. The Mercedes is the better pick if you desire top-down cruising comfort over sportiness.

Which Is Better: 2014 Jaguar F-Type or 2014 Chevrolet Corvette?

Before you decide on the Jaguar, test-drive a 2014 Chevy Corvette coupe or convertible. The Corvette offers V8 muscle at a price that’s often much lower than used F-Type V8 models. Its interior looks and feels just as luxe, its trunk is larger, and it offers athletic handling with a smoother ride than the F-Type. The ‘Vette is the better sports car and the better buy.
