2019 Jaguar F-Pace Performance Review

Performance: 8.4

The 2019 Jaguar F-Pace offers several peppy engine choices, a smooth-shifting transmission, and standard all-wheel drive. Add it all up, and you have a dynamic, agile SUV that's prepared for any road condition. This Jag also rides comfortably, and its fuel economy is decent for the class.

  • "This is a sharp SUV that'll give sport sedans a run for their money." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Gushing? Perhaps, but Jaguar's earned it - the F-Pace is stupid fun to drive at extra-legal speeds on mountain roads." -- Autoweek (2017)
  • "I'm not sure anyone informed this handsome Jag of its high-riding roots, because you'd be hard-pressed to find an SUV that acts more like a sports car than this one." -- New York Daily News (2017)

Acceleration and Power

The F-Pace comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 247 horsepower. All of the F-Pace’s engines come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Though it's not the star of the lineup, the base engine is plenty capable in all driving situations, and it delivers good acceleration.

Several other engines are available. There's a 296-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo-four, a 180-horsepower turbodiesel, and a 380-horsepower 3.0-liter supercharged V6. The most power-packed engine resides in the new-for-2019 SVR trim, which features a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 that produces 550 horsepower.

As you might guess, the F-Pace gets faster as the horsepower ratings climb, and the V6 and V8 options can really move this SUV with aplomb. According to Jaguar estimates, the SVR will go from zero to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. Not only is that a sports-car-worthy sprint time, but it's a full second quicker than any other engine in the F-Pace's lineup.

The F-Pace gets an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway with its turbo-four engine. Those estimates about average for the class. The turbodiesel engine really shines when it comes to fuel economy, with a rating of 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

  • "The new standard turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is … enough to get this SUV down the road with a neck snap. Jaguar says it'll accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 6.4 seconds. We also like the turbocharged diesel 4-cylinder engine, which provides deep torque for superb low-speed acceleration. But our favorite is the supercharged V6. It's a thrill-maker, pumping out 380 horsepower and a mouthwatering growl from the SUV's dual exhaust tips. With this engine Jag says the F-Pace hits 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds. The 8-speed automatic transmission is also one of the best, shifting precisely and quickly." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "Don't be fooled by its 180-hp rating; its 318 lb-ft of torque means the diesel doesn't want for muscle. An estimated 7.8-second zero-to-60-mph time isn't exactly blistering, but the only time it can really feel flat-footed is with an aggressive stab of the accelerator from rest. Although the diesel ignites with a bit of a shake, and at times buzzes the floorpan when working hard above 3000 rpm, it is quiet throughout the rev range." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "Just as I noted when driving the F-Type, when driving the F-Pace around town, the V-6 isn't particularly exciting. It whirs and moans in a distinctly non-sporty manner, and doesn't feel as potent as its horsepower rating would suggest. But the impression is deceptive; once you plant your boot deeply into the throttle, the supercharged six awakens with a stirring howl. Suddenly it's happy, eager. And it's plenty strong. … I did use the shift paddles a few times, but in truth, the eight-speed automatic is smart enough that Drive is usually all you need." -- Automobile Magazine (2017)

Handling and Braking

This small SUV handles incredibly well. It's agile on winding roads, and its low center of gravity makes it feel more like a sports car than an SUV. Despite its athleticism, the F-Pace also provides a cushioned ride. Every model comes standard with all-wheel drive and JaguarDrive Control, which features Normal, Eco, Dynamic, and Rain/Ice/Snow driving modes.

  • "Handling is further enhanced by Jaguar's 'torque vectoring by braking' system that subtly applies the brakes to one or some wheels to maintain the desired line through a corner. This is a crossover with the talents of a sport sedan, while the SVR has abilities akin to a high-performance sedan." -- Autotrader
  • "The standard all-wheel-drive system, rear-biased for a sporty feel in normal circumstances, features torque vectoring that sends power to any wheels with the most traction and making the outside wheels faster than their inside counterparts to trace tight lines through corners. A highlight is the ride quality: completely composed, never jarring." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "It requires no more than a mile or two of driving before recognizing the chassis is a thing of brilliance. There's a sense of immense stiffness in the structure but it doesn't translate into a harsh, noisy ride. The comfort and quietness is even more surprising once you've flung the F-Pace into a few turns only to discover flat cornering behavior, utterly neutral handling and steering that does exactly what's asked of it." -- Autoweek (2017)
