2018 Jaguar E-Pace Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.8

The 2018 Jaguar E-Pace features a rather plain design, and while some people are OK with a clean-cut look, others may want a little more panache from a luxury vehicle. Materials quality is generally good, but there are a few low-rent surfaces sprinkled about.

The seats are supportive and have plenty of headroom, though rear-seat legroom is somewhat lacking. Cargo space is excellent for the class. The E-Pace offers plenty of features as well, including an infotainment system with a large touch screen.

  • "The interior design is clean and simple, modern mass-market Jaguar." -- Car and Driver
  • "Oddly, despite being part of the same company and using much of the same hardware, Land Rover seems to be having significantly better luck than Jag when it comes to making their interiors feel both rich and modern." -- CNET
  • "The interior's a little plain and let down by a few weak material choices – the plastics in the center console don't look luxury grade to me – but the aggressive passenger grab handle and robot finger shifter add a nice air of bad ass. Be brave and pick the red interior if you really want the car to feel vivacious." -- Jalopnik

Seating

The E-Pace seats five and comes standard with cloth upholstery. Leather upholstery; 10-, 14-, or 18-way power-adjustable front seats; heated front seats; heated rear seats; and a heated steering wheel are available. There are two full sets of LATCH connectors for installing car seats.

The front seats are wide and comfortable, and they provide all-day support. However, footroom is slightly constricted by the front wheel wells. The rear-seat setup is geared vertically, so headroom is abundant but legroom is limited.

  • The front seats are comfortable, but the cabin is positioned so far forward that the passenger will notice the wheel well intruding awkwardly into the footwell. The rear-seat measurements look competitive on paper, but in reality that space is inordinately vertical. Most adult passengers will struggle with kneeroom, even while sitting behind average-size front-seat occupants." -- Car and Driver
  • "It also features above-average rear seat room – I had plenty of space in back, including headroom on my test vehicle, which featured a gigantic fixed-panel moonroof." -- CNET
  • "I can't tell you how the crossover is on the highway because Corsica's roads are too tight for cruising speeds, but I'm happy to report that a full work day in the seats of an E-Pace flies right by." -- Jalopnik

Interior Features

Standard features in the E-Pace include dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, five USB ports, a six-speaker audio system, and the InControl Touch Pro infotainment system with a 10-inch touch screen. Standard driver assistance features include automatic emergency braking, driver drowsiness monitoring, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, and lane keep assist.

Available features include Jaguar’s Activity Key, keyless entry, an 11- or 15-speaker Meridian audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, InControl Remote, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and an upgraded infotainment system with InControl Apps and navigation. Available active safety features include a head-up display, blind spot monitoring, a surround-view camera, a forward traffic monitor, parallel and perpendicular park assist, and adaptive cruise control.

The available Activity Key is nifty feature that's unique to Jaguar (for now, anyway). It's a wearable wristband the lets you gain entry to the E-Pace without a conventional key. It’s a perfect option for fans of outdoor sports – like hiking and surfing – who wish to enjoy their adventures without worrying about losing their car keys.

Jaguar's infotainment system has a 10-inch screen, which is larger than the screens some other SUVs offer. Many people think it works well, but some users find its response times slow. It also doesn’t offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto for smartphone integration, which you can get in most luxury rivals. On the bright side, the physical controls for climate functions are excellent.

  • "A colorful 12.3-inch widescreen infotainment system is tucked nicely into the dashboard and runs Jaguar's reasonably intuitive InControl Touch Pro operating system. Through that you can integrate your phone with the car, sort of, porting some apps to the infotainment screen and turning the phone effectively into a remote key fob." -- Jalopnik
  • "The heart of the E-Pace's cabin experience, InControl Touch Pro, offers a competitive feature set, but it's still not the most intuitive or quick-witted infotainment system on the market. And despite repeated 'it's coming' promises, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration remain MIA." -- CNET
  • "… the combination of a standard 10-inch Touch Pro screen for infotainment and large, tactile rotary controls for heating and ventilation work well. The optional multi-configurable 12.3-inch TFT Interactive Driver Display and next-gen full color HUD demonstrate JLR has got its act together with the tech too." -- Autoblog

Cargo

With the rear seats up, the E-Pace has 24.2 cubic feet of cargo space. Fold the rear seats down, and it provides 52.7 cubic feet of space. These are some of the highest totals in the class; only the BMX X1 has more room. A power liftgate and a hands-free power liftgate are available.

  • Once you get the car unlocked, the tailgate can be opened with an optional foot gesture control availing you of 24.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats." -- Jalopnik
  • "I've already touched on its good-looking candy-coated shell, and at 173 inches long, the E-Pace is actually relatively lengthy compared to rivals like the BMW X2 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class. It's the same span as new XC40 from Volvo, but it bests all of them in cargo capacity, offering up to 52.5 cubic-feet of space with the second-row seats folded (or 24.2 cu-ft with them up)." -- CNET
  • "Twenty-four cubic feet of cargo space, on the other hand, easily surpasses what most competitors can muster." -- Car and Driver
