2018 Jaguar E-Pace Review

The new 2018 Jaguar E-Pace provides a balanced ride and good interior utility, but it also has poor predicted reliability, minimal rear-seat legroom, and low gas mileage estimates. These negatives result in the Jaguar’s spot in the bottom half of its class rankings.

Pros & Cons

  • Balanced ride and handling
  • Lots of cargo space
  • Supportive seats
  • Unrefined engines
  • Subpar fuel economy estimates
  • Little rear-seat legroom
  • Poor predicted reliability rating

Is the Jaguar E-Pace a Good SUV?

The Jaguar E-Pace is a decent SUV. It leads the class in some areas, but it lags behind rivals in others. For example, the E-Pace is nimble, provides a smooth ride, and has more cargo space than almost every competitor. Rivals have more refined engines, better fuel economy, more responsive infotainment systems, and superior predicted reliability scores. This Jaguar's front seats are supportive and comfortable, but the rear seats are a little short on legroom. While this is a pretty good SUV overall, it still has work to do if it wants to be truly good or great.

Should I Buy the Jaguar E-Pace?

The E-Pace has its pros and cons, and it matches up with most class rivals pretty well. Still, it's not a great value. It costs more than many competitors, meaning you’ll pay more money for not much more quality. At the very least, you should check out rivals like the Audi Q3 and BMW X1. You might also want to consider the E-Pace's big brother, the Jaguar F-Pace.

Should I Buy a New or Used Jaguar E-Pace?

The E-Pace is brand-new for 2018, so there are no previous models to choose from.

How Much Does the Jaguar E-Pace Cost?

The top trims are the E-Pace R-Dynamic HSE and the E-Pace First Edition, both of which start at more than $53,000.

Jaguar E-Pace Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: Jaguar E-Pace or Audi Q3?

There are many similarities between the Jaguar E-Pace and the Audi Q3. Both vehicles have similar fuel economy estimates, smooth rides, solid cabin quality, and relatively spacious seats. The Audi has a weaker engine, but the Jaguar's engines aren't much of an improvement. Though the Audi has a higher predicted reliability rating, the E-Pace is a slightly better vehicle overall thanks to its extra cargo space and features. If you're willing to spend nearly $6,000 more, go for the E-Pace. If not, the Q3 is a good alternative.

Which Is Better: Jaguar E-Pace or BMW X1?

The BMW X1 is also much less expensive than the E-Pace, but it matches up much more favorably against its Jaguar rival. The X1 has a more spacious interior, providing plenty of passenger room and a higher cargo capacity. The BMW is also well-built inside and offers features the Jaguar doesn't. Though the E-Pace has more powerful engines, the X1 gets better gas mileage and is more athletic because of its superior handling. Additionally, the X1 has a higher predicted reliability rating. These are both good SUVs, but the BMW is the better choice overall.

Which Is Better: Jaguar E-Pace or Jaguar F-Pace?

The Jaguar F-Pace is a luxury compact SUV. As you might expect, it shares many similarities with its little brother. Both of the E-Pace's engines are offered in the F-Pace, though the larger Jaguar also offers a turbodiesel and a supercharged V6. The F-Pace delivers better handling, but both SUVs come standard with all-wheel drive. You won't be shocked to learn that the F-Pace – as the larger vehicle – has more cargo and passenger space. The features list is similar in both vehicles. The F-Pace costs a few thousand dollars more than the E-Pace, but it's worth it.

E-Pace Interior

How Many People Does the E-Pace Seat?

The Jaguar E-Pace seats five people. The front seats offer plenty of room and support. The rear seats look more spacious than they are; they offer lots of headroom, but legroom will be a bit tight for most adult passengers.

E-Pace and Car Seats

The E-Pace has two full sets of LATCH connectors for installing child safety seats.

E-Pace Interior Quality

Inside, the E-Pace's design and materials quality aren't anything to complain about. However, they're also less impressive than you might expect from a luxury SUV.

E-Pace Cargo Space

This Jaguar bests nearly every competitor when it comes to cargo space. It has over 24 cubic feet of room behind the rear seats, giving you enough space for your beloved Labrador or several pieces of luggage. Fold the rear seats down, and you’ll have more than 52 cubic feet of space.

E-Pace Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

Standard features in the E-Pace include Bluetooth, five USB ports, a six-speaker audio system, and the InControl Touch Pro infotainment system with a 10-inch touch screen. Available features include an 11- or 15-speaker Meridian audio system, satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and an upgraded infotainment system with InControl Apps and navigation.

The 10-inch touch screen is easy to see, but its interface garners mixed reviews. Some critics think the system works well, while others find it isn't as sophisticated or quick to respond as it should be. Additionally, the E-Pace is part of the minority of luxury vehicles that don't offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. For more information, read What Is Apple CarPlay? and What Is Android Auto? E-Pace Performance

E-Pace Engine: Two Turbo-Four Choices

The E-Pace provides two engine options: the 246-horsepower base engine and the 296-horsepower engine that comes in R-Dynamic models. In practice, the engines aren't all that different. They also aren't as good as many other luxury subcompact SUVs' engines, as the Jaguar engines feel unrefined and have uneven throttle response.

E-Pace Gas Mileage: Certainly Not a Class Leader

If cars went to university, the E-Pace's mpg ratings would merit academic probation. This Jaguar gets 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, ratings that are bested by almost every class rival.

The Audi Q3 is one of the few classmates that will cost you more in gas each year than the E-Pace (by about $100). In contrast, the BMW X3 will save you about $100 each year compared to the Jaguar.

E-Pace Ride and Handling: It Won't Hold You Back

Like most vehicles in the class, the E-Pace is designed to be an around-town cruiser instead of a corner carver. That said, this little SUV feels poised around turns and provides plenty of road grip thanks to standard all-wheel drive. It also rides smoothly even over rough pavement.

Which Jaguar E-Pace Model Is Right for Me?

There are plenty of E-Pace trims to choose from. All models feature a turbocharged four-cylinder engine (horsepower varies), a nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive.

Since the base engine and the R-Dynamic engine likely won't feel that different in practice, there's little reason to shell out the extra cash for more horsepower. Instead, opt for the E-Pace S. It has a nice array of standard features and many more available add-ons to customize your Jaguar exactly as you wish.

There are plenty of available features and option packages to add to each trim. Some are styling options, while others are additional comfort, convenience, and tech features. Depending on which trim you want and what features you wish to add, you may end up increasing the cost of your E-Pace by thousands of dollars.

The Final Call

The new-for-2018 Jaguar E-Pace is a dynamic subcompact SUV that has a lot going for it. However, there are also some notable areas where it lags behind its class rivals. While this is a pretty good vehicle, it isn't the best value in the class.

Don’t just take our word for it. Check out comments from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

  • "Its mission is one of conquest, and early indications show that's exactly what's happening-more than 90 percent of customers who've placed an order for an E-Pace in the U.S. are newcomers to the brand. A lot of buyers are looking for a stylish, accomplished, competitively priced premium compact SUV, and they are likely going to see that Jaguar has a definite place in this segment." -- Motor Trend
  • "Based on the hundreds of miles I just drove on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, those youthful, more gender-neutral buyers should find a lot to like. So much so, in fact, that I'm betting that this little softroader will become Jaguar's best-seller in short order." -- CNET
  • "If you want a practical and reasonable luxury crossover that looks awesome, the E-Pace is suddenly one of your best options. … Like pretty much everything else in this class of car, it's a little too soft and heavy to be a back road beast and way too stiff to be enjoyable off-road. It's plenty nice to do daily driving in, though. And as I can't help but keep saying – it looks darn good doing it." -- Jalopnik
