2016 Infiniti QX80 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.4

Auto journalists say the Infiniti QX80 carries the luxury label with ease thanks to its handsome, well-appointed cabin. The ride is quiet, and the first two rows of seats are roomy and supportive. The third row is well-suited for children, but adults may find it cramped. The tech features are user-friendly, but the controls may be hard to reach for some drivers. The driver assistance features have several indicator lights that can be distracting. The 2016 Infiniti QX80 offers average cargo space for the class.

  • "Its luxury appointments … are perfectly suited to the upper-class clientele that Infiniti seeks. In fact, the QX80 possesses one of the most attractive and well-equipped luxury SUV interiors we've tested." -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • "Its interior is lavishly appointed, with supple leather, wood trim and soft touch materials adorning every surface." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "The idea of the 2014 QX80 as an ‘executive jet’ for the road really helps everything about the SUV make sense. The interior is a finely crafted suite and, with the smoothness of its ride and quietness of its cabin, the QX80 is an idyllic place to be." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014)
  • "Materials and assembly quality are first-rate and price-appropriate. Soft leathers, handsome wood accents, and tasteful detailing create a pleasingly classy ambiance." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Seating

The 2016 QX80 seats seven (eight with the optional second row bench seat) and comes standard with leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. Heated second row seats are available.

The first and second rows of seats are supportive and comfortable, with plenty of room for passengers. The third-row seats are more confined than some rivals', but they are still suitable for children and on shorter trips.

  • "The QX80's seating is supremely supportive in the first and second rows, and even the 60/40 power folding third-row seats, while not spacious, are suitable for adults." -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • [T]he first- and second row-seats (the latter of which can be configured with captain's chairs or as a bench seat) are spacious and comfortable. The same can't be said of the third-row, which is essentially a child-only space." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "Up front, driver and passenger have plenty of room to spread out, and they also are separated by a thickly padded armrest/storage bin. On the other end of this long rig is a pair of small 3rd-row seats that have a power-operated folding feature.” -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • As you'd expect, the QX80's front and second-row seats offer a high degree of comfort. The 60/40-split power-folding third-row seat has less legroom than the third rows in other large luxury SUVs, and depending on their age and size, youngsters may only find it passable for short jaunts." -- Edmunds (2014)

Interior Features

Standard features in the QX80 include a power moonroof, push-button start, tri-zone automatic climate control, a 13-speaker Bose audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port, satellite radio, navigation, voice recognition, an 8-inch touch screen, a surround-view camera, and front and rear parking sensors. Available features include a 15-speaker Bose audio system, a rear-seat entertainment system, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, backup collision intervention, forward emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning.

The in-vehicle electronics are easily controlled thanks to the simple user interface, and there are separate switches on the dash, though they may be hard to reach. While the QX80 offers many driver assistance features, some of them can be distracting because of the many indicator lights and warning noises associated with them. Also, the blind spot monitoring feature is less effective at lower speeds than at higher speeds.

  • "My sole complaint is that the blind-spot monitoring only seems to work at highway speeds, when I could use its guidance in squeezing the long chassis into traffic at much lower speeds." -- CNET (2014)
  • "Just as important is the fact that technophobes have nothing to fear, because the QX's electronics interface is very easy and intuitive to use." -- Edmunds (2014)
  • "Major audio and climate functions have separate switches, but they're rather low on the center console for easiest use. Far more distracting, at least for our testers, the various driver-assistance features included with the Technology Package generate enough lights and sounds to fill the bridge of Starship Enterprise--another reason to avoid this deceptively pricey option." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Cargo

The 2016 QX80 has average cargo capacity for the class, offering 16.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up, 49.6 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 95.1 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. A power liftgate is standard.

The QX80 provides enough room to haul a variety of luggage, sports equipment, and other goods, though take note that the second row bench seat is a better option if you frequently haul cargo, as the standard second row bucket seats have a fixed console between them that makes loading large items more difficult.

  • "Fold down the second- and third-row seats and the QX reveals a plentiful cargo bay to hide luggage, sports gear or the latest acquisitions from Best Buy." -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • "[T]he QX80 is undeniably useful as a pack mule." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • Avoid the 2nd-row buckets if you often haul bulky cargo. The fixed console/armrest that comes with them is a fairly large obstruction. On the other hand, it contributes to generous in-cabin storage along with a roomy front console bin and good-size door pockets." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
