Note: This performance review was created when the 2017 Infiniti QX70 was new.

Scorecard

Performance: 8.7

The 2017 Infiniti QX70 features a V6 engine that delivers good power and quick acceleration. However, it’s paired with a seven-speed automatic that receives mixed reviews. Some testers think the transmission is smooth and responsive, but others complain that it’s reluctant to downshift. The QX70 doesn’t get great fuel economy compared to other luxury midsize SUVs; it’s slightly below average for the class.

  • Despite getting on in years, the 2017 Infiniti QX70 still delivers a respectable amount of performance." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2017 Infiniti QX70 crossover SUV isn't your run-of-the-mill luxury SUV. With its standard rear-wheel-drive layout and potent 325-horsepower engine, this Infiniti crossover SUV is decidedly sporty. Throw in a near 50/50 weight distribution, independent suspension and lower ride height, and it's clear the QX70 was made more for on-road performance than rugged utility or off-road antics." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Sometimes, you can judge a book by its cover - the QX70's aggressive stance and muscular lines suggest that this crossover is all about performance, and it certainly has all the right stuff under the sheetmetal to back up that impression." -- Left Lane News (2016)

Acceleration and Power

The QX70 features a 3.7-liter V6 engine that puts out 325 horsepower. A seven-speed automatic transmission is standard. The engine has ample power for every driving situation, and the acceleration is quick when passing on the highway or taking off from a stoplight. The QX70 gets an EPA-estimated 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway – numbers that are a little worse than the class average.

While critics generally approve of the engine, opinions are split about the transmission. Some say it’s responsive when you use manual shift mode thanks to its rev-matching feature, but others think that in full automatic mode, it hesitates to downshift when you need more power.

  • "Infiniti's 325-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 delivers excellent response, while the rev-matching 7-speed automatic suffers none of the lag or indecision experienced with some auto-manuals." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
  • "The 7-speed automatic's paddle shifters and automated rev-matching work wonders, allowing us to circumvent the automatic's computer-controlled module that sometimes seems slow to downshift." -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • "This thing is fast, and once underway power is a smooth rush." -- AutoWeek (2014)

Handling and Braking

Rear-wheel drive is standard in the QX70, but all-wheel drive is available. Though it isn’t a sports car, the QX70 is engaging to drive. It handles corners with ease, and there’s not much body lean. Some test drivers say the steering is sharp, but others think it doesn’t have great feel.

A stiff suspension contributes to the handling performance, but it also means that the QX70 doesn’t have as smooth a ride as some class rivals. If you do plan to cut up some curvy roads, you’ll appreciate the QX70’s sturdy brakes.

  • "This Infiniti has plenty of grip and is fun to drive vigorously, a trait that's few and far between for SUVs." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • Acceleration is strong, and it corners with confidence thanks to a sport-tuned suspension. Unfortunately, the stiffer ride quality negatively affects comfort, and this is especially true with the big 21-inch wheels." -- Edmunds
  • "Steering feel is also very heavy and artificial -- shockingly so at first, but you do get used to it after a while. At times it made it seem like I was wielding the car, not driving it, which is at odds with its sedan/sport crossover feel." -- AutoWeek (2014)
