2019 Infiniti QX60 Performance Review

Scorecard

Performance: 7.8

The 2019 Infiniti QX60 doesn't match the overall performance of many competitors. While its engine is adequately powerful and gets pretty good gas mileage, several other luxury midsize SUVs deliver better handling, a smoother ride, or both.

  • "The QX60 is a great driving vehicle that actually feels smaller on the road than it actually is. The only time that the QX60's size becomes apparent from behind the wheel is when you're squeezing into small parking spaces." -- Autotrader (2018)
  • "Infiniti is usually synonymous with performance, but the QX60 is more focused on hauling occupants in comfort and quiet. Its soft suspension and numb steering curb its sporting aspirations, but acceleration is satisfactory." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Unlike Infiniti's burly, truck-based QX80 SUV, the QX60 rides on a car-like unibody platform that's designed for a comfortable on-road ride and predictable handling rather than trail-blazing or towing capability." -- Left Lane News (2015)

Acceleration and Power

All QX60 models feature a 3.5-liter V6 engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission. This powertrain provides ample power for driving around town and on the highway. According to EPA estimates, the QX60 earns 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Those are higher ratings than many rivals earn but only by 1-2 mpg in most cases.

  • "While we usually dislike CVT automatics in luxury vehicles due to their elastic-like power delivery when accelerating quickly, the one in the QX60 works pretty well. Altogether, this powertrain is quiet and smooth, lending itself well to its luxury people-mover mission." -- Edmunds
  • "Throttle calibration is smooth and progressive, with no jumpiness as you ease into the gas. That, combined with the lack of gear changes from the continuously variable transmission, makes the QX60 impressively serene in traffic around town." -- Autotrader (2018)
  • "The 295-horsepower V6 is admirable in both its ability to move the QX60 and its fuel consumption." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

Handling and Braking

Overall, the QX60 is relatively easy to drive, but its driving dynamics receive mixed reviews. Some critics say the QX60 handles fairly well but at the expense of ride quality. Others say this Infiniti prioritizes comfort over handling, delivering a smooth ride at the expense of sharp cornering. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

  • "Lots and lots of body roll – this suspension is soft and sloppy. The QX60 understeers readily even around slow turns and actually handles better with all traction control systems on. Not exactly a 'sport'-utility vehicle." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2018 Infiniti QX60 is one of the better-handling luxury SUVs on the market, but it does sacrifice the softer ride and lighter steering input preferred by some buyers. We think it's an acceptable trade-off so long as the road remains fairly smooth. Infiniti has taken a rather aggressive approach toward the QX60's suspension tuning, a bonus when speeding through winding back roads and mountain passes, but a bit of a drawback when encountering rough or pothole-packed pavement." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "Last year's suspension tweaks marginally refine the crossover's handling. Body roll is less pronounced and overall grip is improved. … Still, the QX60 continues to prioritize comfort over dynamic prowess, as the ride is marshmallow soft and steering effort is so light and overboosted that the wheel can be turned with a single finger—a boon for navigating crowded parking lots but a drag on driver confidence when navigating twisty two-lane roads or crowded freeways." -- Car and Driver (2017)
