2019 Infiniti Q70 Review

The 2019 Infiniti Q70 delivers decent performance and has a spacious cabin, but there are several areas where this sedan lags behind the competition. That's why it finishes near the bottom of our luxury midsize car rankings.

Pros & Cons

  • Spacious, supportive seats
  • Powerful available V8 engine
  • Borderline-obsolete infotainment system
  • Outdated cabin
  • Low gas mileage
  • Mixed reviews on ride quality

Is the Infiniti Q70 a Good Car?

The Infiniti Q70 is an OK car. It has two powerful engine options, and most reviewers think it has solid handling ability. Inside, you'll find roomy and supportive seats. However, there are some notable downsides with this Infiniti as well. Its gas mileage ratings trail most rivals', and the ride isn't always smooth. The interior and the infotainment system are showing their age, and many rivals simply look and feel more modern.

Should I Buy the Infiniti Q70?

If you're in love with the Q70, you should buy it. However, it finishes near the bottom of our luxury midsize car rankings for a reason. Plus, it has a higher starting price than many of its rivals, so it's not even a great value. Instead of the Q70, you should consider an alternative like the Audi A6 or Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Should I Buy a New or Used Infiniti Q70?

The 2019 Q70 is part of a generation that began with the 2011 model year, and the Q70 hasn't seen any major changes since the 2016 model year. With so few changes, it's worth looking at recent used models, which could potentially save you thousands of dollars compared to a new Q70.

Infiniti Q70 Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: Infiniti Q70 or Audi A6?

The Audi A6 sits near the top of our luxury midsize car rankings, and for good reason. It features multiple powerful engine options and dynamic handling while still returning better fuel economy than the Q70. The A6's cabin is one of the nicest in the class, and it has plenty of cutting-edge, easy-to-use technology. To put a cherry on top, the A6 has a lower base price than its Infiniti rival. There's no comparison here. Choose the Audi.

Which Is Better: Infiniti Q70 or Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class also sits much higher in our rankings than the Q70. The E-Class has arguably the nicest cabin in the segment. It looks great and is richly appointed, and the features list seems to go on forever. The E-Class also delivers engaging performance. It handles corners well, features a strong engine lineup, and offers two high-performance models. The E-Class costs a bit more than the Infiniti, but it's worth the extra money.

Q70 Interior

How Many People Does the Q70 Seat?

This Infiniti sedan seats five in style. The front seats provide plenty of comfort, space, and support. The rear seats tell the same story, and they have enough room even for tall adults, though the middle seat is a tight squeeze. The long-wheelbase Q70L offers even more rear-seat space.

Q70 and Car Seats

There are two full sets of LATCH connectors for installing car seats, but the system receives a Poor rating (the lowest possible) from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for its ease of use. IIHS noted that lower anchors are set too deep in the seat, require too much force to attach the straps to, and are difficult to manuever around.

Q70 Interior Quality

While the Q70 features plenty of high-end materials throughout its well-built cabin, this sedan lacks the modern look and feel of many competitors, making it seem past its prime.

Q70 Cargo Space

The Q70's trunk provides an average amount of space for a luxury midsize sedan – just under 15 cubic feet. That's enough room for roughly a dozen shopping bags.

Q70 Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

Standard features include a moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, an 8-inch infotainment system, navigation, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, and satellite radio. Available features include a 16-speaker Bose surround-sound system.

The touch screen that accompanies the infotainment system is antiquated and doesn't feature the sharp graphics you'll find with rivals’ screens. There's a control knob that goes along with the screen, but it's more complicated than it needs to be. The infotainment system also lacks smartphone connectivity options like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which are available in most competitors.

Q70 Performance

Q70 Engine: V6 or V8?

The Q70 features a 330-horsepower base engine that offers plenty of power for daily driving. If you want an engine that really makes this midsize sedan feel fast, go for the 420-horsepower V8. Infiniti discontinued the hybrid model for 2019.

Q70 Gas Mileage: Not Great Numbers

Most luxury midsize cars get better fuel economy ratings than the Q70, which earns 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway with its base engine. With the V8, those numbers dip to 16/24 mpg.

Driving the Q70 will cost you about $400 more per year on gas compared to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and about $600 more per year compared to the Audi A6.

Q70 Ride and Handling: See for Yourself

The general consensus about the Q70 is that it handles well, but the ride may be a little more unsettled than you'd like. However, a few test drivers found the exact opposite, saying that the Q70 rides smoothly and isn't overly sporty. Be sure to test-drive this Infiniti before you buy to form your own opinion.

The Final Call

The 2019 Infiniti Q70 finishes near the bottom of our luxury midsize car rankings. While this sedan does some things well, it trails its classmates in too many areas for it to be competitive in this segment. Even the things it does well can be found in other cars that have fewer drawbacks. Many of the Q70’s negatives are a reflection of its age – it’s been several years since Infiniti redesigned this car, and much of the competition has surpassed it in that time.

Don’t just take our word for it. Check out comments from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

  • "This generation of the Q70 dates back to 2011, back when Infiniti called it the M56. There have been some updates over the years, but this is a very long time in the luxury sedan segment to go without a full redesign. Though spacious, the interior comes up short on storage and aesthetic appeal, and the touchscreen entertainment system feels ancient compared to the standard set by current luxury offerings." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • As the flagship sedan, the Q70 must not only do battle with more technically sophisticated models such as the BMW 5 Series and Cadillac CT6, but also newer makes like the Genesis G80. … Long-wheelbase models offer impressive rear-seat legroom, and all Q70s are loaded with the company's best technology and performance equipment. Still, in a space crowded with competitors like the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Lexus GS and Cadillac CT6, the Q70 won't always come in first place." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "In the 2016 Infiniti Q70, you'll find a midsize luxury performance sedan on par with the best BMW, Audi and Cadillac sedans but with more expressive styling." -- Autotrader (2016)
