2020 Infiniti Q60 Performance

2020 Infiniti Q60 Performance Review

Performance: 7.3

The 2020 Infiniti Q60 features a robust engine and a comfortable ride. Handling is composed, and fuel economy estimates are average when compared with other luxury small cars with V6 engines.

  • "The top Red Sport trim adds a heaping dose of performance due to an upgraded engine, an adaptive suspension and more powerful brakes. But regardless of trim, drivers will enjoy smooth on-road manners." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "Is the Q60 Red Sport 400 an exhilarating driving experience? Not exactly, but it sure is quick off the line. For a holistically sporty experience, look to the aforementioned Audi, BMW, Cadillac and Mercedes models." -- New York Daily News (2017)
  • "We have driven plenty of cars over the years that are exciting enough to make us wax poetic. This is not one of them." -- Car and Driver (2017)

Acceleration and Power

There are two versions of the Q60's 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. The base variant in the Pure and Luxe models makes 300 horsepower. The Red Sport trim gets a retuned version that boosts horsepower to 400. A seven-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Both engines are robust. In its base setup, this V6 is more than capable of city and highway cruising. The more-powerful version in the Red Sport helps deliver prompt acceleration whenever you need it.

The base engine gets 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Compared with the class as a whole, these numbers are below average. The Red Sport variant isn’t much better: 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. However, if you compare these numbers to luxury small cars with V6 engines, the Q60’s ratings are about average.

  • "Although we like the standard turbo V6, the Red Sport's engine is outstanding and has plenty of power for all occasions." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "During our test drive, only the 400-hp version was available. Applying that power to the road is fast and fun, with acceleration on tap at any sane speed. Prodding the throttle at 50 miles per hour makes particularly quick work of overtaking. Infiniti should be proud of this new engine." -- Autotrader (2017)
  • "The gearbox features a welcome manual shift mode, though there's a slight lag in responding to commands. For the majority of my drive, I leave the transmission in full auto with the Q60's drive mode selector into Sport+ for quick upshifts and well-timed downshifts." -- CNET (2017)

Handling and Braking

The Q60 has a smooth ride. It’s a little stiff but not uncomfortably so. Great road grip and strong brakes help this Infiniti stay composed. The available adaptive steering, however, feels numb. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

  • "We're less fond of the optional Direct Adaptive Steering system, which feels overly disconnected and artificial. Without it, the Q60's handling is secure." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "The ride quality in normal mode is compliant, if on the stiffer side. The system is excellent when switched to its most aggressive mode, limiting body lean and providing loads of grip." -- Left Lane News (2017)
  • "The brakes feel strong and confident, with an initial bite that might seem too much if you hit the pedal hard. But if you keep the inputs smooth, there's quite a bit of driving satisfaction to be had." -- Autotrader (2017)
