2015 Infiniti Q50 Hybrid Review

The luxury small car segment is a competitive one, boasting an abundance of good choices for used car buyers. However, the 2015 Infiniti Q50 Hybrid is not one of them. There are quite a few trade-offs for the car's good mileage; cargo space takes a hit to make room for the battery, and the regenerative brakes are grabby.

Pros & Cons

  • Good V6 hybrid fuel economy
  • User-friendly technology

  • Dull steering
  • Touchy brakes
  • Small cargo space

2015 Infiniti Q50 Hybrid Overview

Is the 2015 Infiniti Q50 Hybrid a Good Used Car?

The 2015 Q50 Hybrid may come with a generous list of standard features and good fuel economy, but that doesn't make it a good car. There are plenty of other cars in the class that far surpass the Q50 Hybrid, especially when it comes to performance.

Used 2015 Infiniti Q50 Hybrid Performance and Interior

The 2015 Q50 Hybrid comes with a V6 engine and an electric motor that make a combined 360 horsepower. A seven-speed automatic transmission is standard. Acceleration is strong, but the transition from electric to gas feels uneven.

With an EPA rating of 29 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, the Q50 Hybrid gets sound numbers for a luxury small car.

Rear-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available. The Q50 Hybrid's performance is among the worst in the class. Steering feels lifeless and the regenerative brakes provide inconsistent stopping power.

There is seating for five in the Q50 Hybrid. Leather upholstery, a moonroof, and heated front seats are standard. Available features include sport seats and a heated steering wheel. Tall occupants in the front may lack thigh support, but the upgraded sport seats are more comfortable. Additionally, tall passengers may not have enough rear-seat leg- or headroom, but most adults should be comfortable. The Q50 Hybrid has lower anchors and tethers for child seats in the rear outboard seats.

Standard features include push-button start and Infiniti's dual-screen InTouch infotainment system, which includes 8- and 7-inch touch screens, Bluetooth, smartphone integration, two USB ports, HD Radio, and a 14-speaker sound system. Navigation is available.

Fast processing times and straightforward menus make the dual-screen system easy to use. There are also redundant physical knobs and buttons to control the system when you don’t want to use the touch screen.

Because the electric motor's battery is located in the rear, the Q50 Hybrid has small cargo space, with just 9.4 cubic feet of trunk space.

Should I Consider Another Used Q50 Hybrid?

The 2015 Q50 Hybrid is the second – and final – model of the car's first generation, which launched with the 2014 model year. The 2015 model saw no major changes from the 2014 model, meaning you can get largely the same car for less money by choosing the 2014 Q50 Hybrid instead.

Which Used Infiniti Q50 Hybrid Is Right for Me?

The 2015 Infiniti Q50 Hybrid comes in two trims: Q50 Hybrid Premium and Q50S Hybrid. The Q50S Hybrid has more performance features, but the base Premium trim should satisfy most buyers. It comes standard with a moonroof, a rearview camera, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a 14-speaker sound system, and Infiniti's InTouch infotainment system with dual 8- and 7-inch touch screens, voice recognition, and smartphone integration.

For greater peace of mind, you may want to consider a certified pre-owned vehicle. The Infiniti certified pre-owned warranty has three levels of coverage based on the vehicle’s age and mileage. Vehicles with less than 15,000 miles receive a six-year/75,000-mile warranty from the original new-car purchase date. Vehicles less than four years old with more than 15,000 miles receive a six-year/unlimited-mileage warranty from the original new-car purchase date. Finally, vehicles more than four years old with more than 15,000 miles receive a two-year/unlimited-mileage warranty good from the CPO purchase date. Infiniti CPO vehicles must pass a 167-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Infiniti warranty page carefully.

2015 Infiniti Q50 Hybrid and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2015 Infiniti Q50 Hybrid or 2015 Lexus CT Hybrid?

The only other hybrid luxury small car for the 2015 model year was the Lexus CT Hybrid. It's a hatchback with more cargo space but less rear-seat legroom than the Q50 Hybrid. The CT Hybrid gets excellent fuel economy, achieving 43 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. However, the CT Hybrid has dreadful performance, as its meager 134 horsepower struggles to get up to highway speeds. The Q50 Hybrid offers more standard and available features, but the CT Hybrid earns a better safety score. If you want features and performance, go with the Infiniti. For safety and fuel economy, go with the Lexus.

Which Is Better: 2015 Infiniti Q50 Hybrid or 2015 Lexus GS 450h?

The Lexus GS 450h is a luxury midsize hybrid with ample head- and legroom in both rows. Its V6 and electric motor combine to produce 338 horsepower. It has brisk acceleration and a comfortable drive. Putting it into Sport mode gets you more athleticism and sharper steering. Coupled with this strong performance is strong fuel economy of 29 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. It comes standard with similar features to the Q50 Hybrid, such as smartphone integration and an 8-inch touch screen. Put all this together – and add a perfect predicted reliability score – and there's no question the GS 450h is the way to go.
