2011 Infiniti M Overview

Completely redesigned for 2011 with new engine options, the Infiniti M offers excellent performance that reviewers said most driving enthusiasts will enjoy. When it was new, reviewers suggested passing on the V8 model, which consumes more fuel and only performs moderately better than the powerful V6 model. In addition, test drivers thought the V8 doesn’t handle as well as the smaller engine due to its added weight. In terms of handling, the M is a solid performer, but reviewers weren’t impressed with the all-wheel drive version, which they felt makes the M sluggish. The M gets average fuel economy at 21 miles per gallon combined city/highway. The M has decent crash test scores.

For 2011, Infiniti used higher-quality materials in the interior, and for the most part, reviewers appreciated the changes. When it was new, reviewers thought the M’s interior was both stylish and comfortable, though the M’s back seats received mixed reactions. Some thought that the back seats need more thigh support and that the M isn’t as spacious as the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Test drivers were impressed with the level of cabin technology in the M, but had mixed feelings about the controls. Instead of a single user interface like BMW’s iDrive or Mercedes’ COMAND, Infiniti opted for separate controls for each function. Some test drivers felt these controls make the display jumbled and distract the driver, while others thought the separate controls make functions simpler. Also, one auto critic noted that even with a noise-cancelling interior, the V6’s vibrations and engine noise get inside the cabin. The M has a load of standard features, which include 10-way power front seats, a memory system for the driver’s seat, Bluetooth connectivity and a six-speaker sound system with satellite radio and USB input. Available features include an 8-inch touch-screen navigation system, a 10-speaker Bose audio system and voice recognition.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2011 Lexus GS doesn’t have the same sporty dynamics as the M. Still, if you’re in search of a comfortable ride, the GS is a solid choice. In addition, the base GS gets better estimated fuel economy ratings than the base M.

Although it isn’t the road carving car it once was, the 2011 BMW 5-Series is a good alternative if you’re seeking a sporty driving experience. With the 5-Series, you’ll get better safety scores over the M, but sacrifice performance and interior quality. However, the 5-Series’ base engine gets better fuel economy than the base M.
