2009 Infiniti M Review

The 2009 Infiniti M combines style and performance, making it a credible alternative to luxury sedans from BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Pros & Cons

  • Exciting driving dynamics
  • Comfortable, high-quality interior
  • Below-average safety scores
  • Marginal fuel economy

2009 Infiniti M Overview

The 2009 Infiniti M is often overshadowed by cars that offer more prestige, but with ample power and good driving dynamics, the M is quietly one of the top performers among 2009 large cars. When it was new, test drivers admired the M’s athletic performance.

Available as the V6-powered M35 or the V8-equipped M45, reviewers said that both models are powerful enough to put other sports sedans in their crosshairs. If you’re seeking maximum power, the M45’s V8 takes a minimal toll on fuel economy, but reviewers felt that most drivers would be satisfied with the V6 engine. The M35 delivers 17/25 mpg city/highway, which is slightly lower than what most of the M35’s rivals get. Selecting an all-wheel drive model or the more powerful M45 will result in slightly lower fuel economy estimates. In terms of handling, the M also matches much of its top competition. Both models are available with all-wheel drive, which should appeal to shoppers who need the additional wet-weather grip.

Inside, reviewers were impressed with the high-quality materials and comfort of the M's cabin. The base M35 comes standard with heated and ventilated power front seats, a sunroof, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth and a six-speaker stereo. When it was new, available option packages added features like a sport-tuned suspension, aluminum trim, navigation, an upgraded stereo, a backup camera, adaptive cruise control and a lane departure warning system.

Unlike BMW’s iDrive system, the Infiniti M has separate controls for the climate, stereo and navigation systems. Some reviewers liked the straightforward nature of this setup, while others thought that it created a button-heavy center stack, which is confusing. The 2009 M’s safety score is below the class average.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Acura RL offers capable performance and reviewers appreciated its comfortable interior and standard all-wheel drive when it was new. The RL also earns stellar safety scores. While it’s not as performance-oriented as the M, the RL’s dependable, well-rounded nature makes it a smart buy among used luxury cars.

If you’re seeking a luxury car that uses less fuel, the 2009 Lexus GS Hybrid offers good performance. Reviewers loved the high-quality interior of the GS Hybrid, and complimented its performance and quiet ride.
