2011 Infiniti FX Overview

The 2011 Infiniti FX stands out from the crowd. It’s sportier than almost any other SUV in its class, with firm, nimble handling and lots of power, even from the V6 engine in the base FX 35. If you want even more power, reviewers said the V8 engine in the FX 50 delivers. Not only is the Infiniti FX a hoot to drive, but test drivers loved its interior for its impressively upscale build quality and vast inventory of high-tech safety and entertainment features. The FX’s long list of standard features includes a nine-speaker audio system, speed-sensitive volume control, leather seats, push-button ignition and a rearview camera. Optional features when it was new include a navigation system with voice controls, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and prevention system, adaptive cruise control and rain-sensing front windshield wipers.

The 2011 Infiniti FX 35 and FX 50 do have some downsides to consider, though. This SUV only seats five, and its suspension trades comfort for sportiness, so the FX’s ride may be too stiff for some. Its swoopy styling cuts down on back-seat headroom and rearward visibility, though a rearview camera is standard. In the FX 50 trim, with its 5.0-liter V8 and standard all-wheel drive, gas mileage is poor, even for a midsize SUV. Overall, the FX’s impressive performance and high-tech interior are great for drivers who don’t want to feel like they’ve succumbed to the soccer-mom SUV trend, but those looking for maximum practicality will likely want to shop elsewhere.

Other Cars to Consider

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the 2011 Lexus RX is practical, comfortable and understated. Its ride is smooth and comfortable, and it gets excellent fuel economy, especially in hybrid RX 450h models. Keep in mind, though, that the Lexus RX doesn’t come with the personality that makes the FX so attractive. Its looks are meant to blend into the crowd, and it’s not particularly fun to drive.

If you’re looking for more seats than the FX offers, or want to find the middle ground between the unrestrained FX and the mild Lexus RX, consider the 2011 Acura MDX. Reviewers said its handling is great for a three-row SUV. Its interior is fairly tech-heavy as well. The MDX’s third row isn’t great for anyone much bigger than a child, but exceptional handling for its size and a well-made interior may be enough to earn this Acura a spot on your shopping list.
