2012 Infiniti EX35 Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2012 Infiniti EX35 was new.

Performance: 8.8

The automotive press says the 2012 Infiniti EX is sporty and speedy enough for enthusiasts, but comfortable enough for everyday drivers.

  • "Based on the G37, the EX is blessed with similar dynamics including lively steering and athletic handling." -- Car and Driver

Acceleration and Power

The 2012 Infiniti EX comes with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that puts out 297 horsepower, making it one of the most powerful SUVs in its class. Reviewers love its quick acceleration and smooth-shifting seven-speed automatic transmission, but they do have two complaints about its powertrain. At times, the V6 engine can be loud, and the automatic transmission can downshift early.

With or without optional all-wheel drive, the EX averages 17/24 mpg city/highway, according to the EPA.

  • "The V6 pulls hard from almost any speed, and the brakes are strong and easy to modulate. Those who opt for the EX instead of the G series sedan will not likely miss the G's slightly better overall dynamics." -- Edmunds
  • "This premium-compact SUV is strong from a stop and executes passing maneuvers with ease. EX35's automatic transmission is generally smooth with prompt downshifts, though one test example suffered from occasional early downshifts. This resulted in unwanted and annoying engine braking." -- Consumer Guide
  • "But like the G, its big V-6 will buzz the cabin at times." -- Car and Driver

Handling and Braking

The 2012 Infiniti EX has rear-wheel drive standard. With that setup, nearly every test driver praises the Infiniti's sporty and responsive driving dynamics, which are comparable with the Infiniti G37 sedan. While the EX is sporty, its ride quality isn’t harsh, and offers a good balance of sportiness and a smooth, comfortable ride.

  • "EX corners well and exhibits only slightly more body lean than G37. A relatively tight turning radius aids in low-speed maneuvering. … The brakes are smooth and strong." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Even with 18-inch wheels it feels comfortable over broken pavement, yet sharp and responsive in tight corners." -- Edmunds
