Crosstrek vs. Impreza: Which of These Subaru Siblings Is Right for You?

Subaru’s Crosstrek subcompact SUV and Impreza compact car are essentially fraternal twins. The Crosstrek is an Impreza hatchback that’s been ruggedized with a raised suspension, plastic body cladding, and a few other design tweaks, including unique wheels. The Crosstrek also has a beefed up locking center differential for towing and a standard six-speed manual transmission. The Impreza’s manual only has five gears. Both cars are available with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The Impreza also comes in a sedan body style, while the Crosstrek is only available in the crossover/hatchback body style.

Subaru completely redesigned the Impreza for the 2017 model year. The Crosstrek was fully redesigned in 2018, following in the Impreza’s footsteps on Subaru’s new Global Platform. So, both vehicles offer the most up-to-date technology and comparable feature sets.

We’ve put the Crosstrek and Impreza head-to-head in the categories that matter most to new car buyers. Keep in mind that we update U.S. News scores regularly as new expert reviews and data become available. Therefore, the scores in this slideshow may not match the scores in our rankings.
