2019 Hyundai Tucson Performance Review

Performance: 6.4

The 2019 Hyundai Tucson gives you a choice of two mediocre four-cylinder engines that work fine for daily driving but aren't equipped to make this SUV fun to drive. Ride quality is mostly smooth. This Hyundai SUV handles adequately, though some rivals are more athletic. Many other crossovers get better fuel economy.

  • "This small crossover is not sporty, but the Tucson will meets the needs of most owners." -- Edmunds
  • "The Tucson is one of the more comfortable-riding models among the small SUV class, a segment that's not exactly brimming with plush riders. Equipped with either the 17-inch wheels on the SE … or the more stylish 19-inch ones on any other trim of the Tucson, it rides well. That said, the SE adds a measure of pliancy that gives it a small edge in comfort. Either way, the suspension proves absorbent and resilient. It effectively manages to buffer and mute any bump, blister, rut, or ridge. Ride motions are slow and controlled, making the Tucson feel steady and composed." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "On the road, the Tucson is something of a mixed bag, though we suspect most crossover shoppers will appreciate the majority of what it has to offer. The Tucson touts a comfortable ride, [and] predictable handling. … In all, we think the Tucson offers one of the most pleasurable, supple rides in the compact-crossover segment." -- Autotrader (2017)

Acceleration and Power

The Tucson comes standard with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 164 horsepower, and it’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Higher trims come with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 181 horsepower. While both engines move the vehicle well enough, they never feel impressive.

With its base engine, the Tucson gets an EPA-estimated 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. With the larger engine, this Hyundai gets 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Many other compact SUVs get better fuel economy than the Tucson.

  • "The first two trim levels, S and Value, employ a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 164 horsepower. It does its job, but not in any particularly refined manner." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "While it's got lots of tech, the Tucson is a bit bland to drive. To be clear, it handles corners just fine and there's a smooth, quiet highway ride, but there isn't much excitement from the engine bay. … Both four-cylinder engines are a bit underwhelming, and neither choice will get you class-leading fuel economy." -- Edmunds
  • "The base SE comes with a 2.0-liter engine that … delivers unobtrusive and predictable acceleration but feels underpowered." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Handling and Braking

This SUV doesn't rank among the most agile in the class, but it handles competently. It also rides smoothly, though the larger available wheels don’t absorb bumps on the road as well as the smaller ones. Front-wheel drive comes standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

  • "While it's got lots of tech, the Tucson is a bit bland to drive. To be clear, it handles corners just fine and there's a smooth, quiet highway ride, but there isn't much excitement from the engine bay." -- Edmunds
  • "The suspension is similarly calm and composed, although the larger wheel sizes do have a negative impact on ride comfort. We'd like more feel from the steering, since it's a bit vague, but we could say that in about 99 percent of cars now electric assistance is the norm." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The Tucson is quite responsive and agile. It may not be as sporty as a Mazda CX-5 or Ford Escape, but it answers the helm promptly. Body lean is well contained." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
