2019 Hyundai Tucson Interior Review

Interior: 6.7

The 2019 Hyundai Tucson does a good job insulating its occupants from outside noise, even at highway speeds. The difference in materials quality between the lower and top trims is pronounced, however, as the lower trims have considerably more hard plastics than the top trims. Some competitors are still more upscale regardless. The seats are comfortable, but some rivals have more passenger and cargo space. Tech-wise, the Tucson offers a lot of features, most of which are easy to use.

  • "The Tucson feels especially roomy and spacious for a compact SUV, with an open and airy cabin that offers easy access and a family-friendly rear seat. Head and knee room are generous; even short drivers can sit up high with a good view out the front. The interior is one of the quietest in this typically not-so-hushed category." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "On the inside, Hyundai has given the 2017 Tucson a simple and generally attractive look. The dashboard design is logical with all the basic controls within arm's reach. Materials quality isn't quite the same story, though, with a lot of hard plastics in the cabin, especially on the base trim. If you upgrade to the Limited trim level, you'll get a lot more in the way of interior livability with a padded dashboard and door inserts with accents." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The interior boasts plenty of small upgrades, including a cleaner dashboard layout, enhanced infotainment functions, and more comfortable seats. But lower-trim models use lots of hard-plastic trim, and even the top-trim Limited model, with its stitched leather inserts, doesn't quite feel up to its $30,000-plus price tag. A bit more flair would be appreciated here." -- Automobile Magazine (2016)

Like other 2-row SUVs, the Tucson seats five people, and it comes standard with cloth upholstery. Leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated front and rear seats, ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The front seats provide plenty of room and support whether you're driving around town or across the country. The rear seats are similarly comfortable, though they lack the expansiveness of some rivals' rear seats.

For installing car seats, there are two full sets of LATCH connectors. The tether anchors are easy to find and identify. The lower anchors are easy to access and maneuver around, but one set of lower anchors requires a lot of force when securing car-seat straps.

  • "Even if they're not class-leading roomy, the rear seats are comfortable enough." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The front seats provide ample support and cushioning for long-distance trips. The rear seats are firmer and flatter but can accommodate average-size adults. The 60/40-split folding seats also feature a slight reclining adjustment." -- Edmunds
  • "Head and knee room are generous, the left foot rest has plenty of space, and the tilt-and-telescope steering column has generous adjustment range. Even short drivers can sit up high with a good view out of the front." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Tucson include an infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, USB ports, a six-speaker audio system, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Standard driver assistance features include driver drowsiness monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera.

Available features include a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, wireless device charging, an 8-inch touch screen, navigation, Hyundai's Blue Link telematics system, an additional USB port, an eight-speaker Infinity audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, and Clari-Fi music restoration technology. Available active safety features include pedestrian detection, a surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and rear cross traffic alert.

The 2019 Tucson gets a larger standard infotainment screen and more driver assistance features than previous models. The well-organized dash makes it easy to use the touch screen and the physical controls, and the infotainment interface is easy to master. The only complaint is that the controls are a bit of a reach for some drivers.

  • "Every Tucson comes with a user-friendly touchscreen – the size and number of functions go up with each trim level. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite radio are standard. Several desirable safety features are standard too, with a few features reserved for the top trim levels." -- Edmunds
  • "The digital display doesn't overload the driver with too much information." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Simplicity rules on the Tucson's dashboard, with easy-to-understand climate and audio controls that have conventional knobs and buttons. It's something of a long reach to controls on the far side of the dashboard, though." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

The Tucson provides 31 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 61.9 cubic feet with them folded down. That's a middle-of-the-pack total behind the rear seats, but most class rivals provide a higher maximum capacity. On the bright side, the Tucson's wide cargo area and available hands-free power liftgate make it easy to load even large or heavy items.

  • "The cargo area is very wide with limited intrusion from the wheel wells; it will easily swallow sports gear or a baby stroller with room to spare. The cargo floor can also be lowered, gaining another inch in height. The rear seats are easy to fold." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "Sweetening the deal is the hands-free power liftgate that comes standard on the Sport and Limited. Unlike the Ford Escape's version of this technology, which works via a foot sensor that you need to kick at, the Tucson employs a proximity sensor that opens the liftgate automatically if it senses you're standing in the vicinity with the key in your pocket." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "… the cargo area's adjustable floor also includes storage for the cargo cover." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
