2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.8

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has soft-touch, premium materials throughout its cabin, ample space for the driver and passengers, and one of the largest trunks in the class. In addition, the infotainment system is easy to use, and the standard features list is generous.

  • "Interior storage inside is plentiful with a lot of room for multiple phones and loose items." -- Edmunds
  • "The Sonata's interior is outstanding, with a handsome and refined overall aesthetic. Everything you touch feels great, from the soft leather on the steering wheel to the nice graining of the plastic on the door cards. There are even small, beautiful details you wouldn't expect to see in a mainstream midsize sedan, like the knurling on the turn signal stalk and temperature controls." -- CNET
  • "Almost everywhere you touch, there are soft plastics or remarkable leather surfaces. From the seats to the door panels to the steering wheel, Hyundai equipped the Sonata Hybrid Limited with premium materials. Just like the exterior promises, the interior feels like a luxury car. Whether you talk about the 10.3-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system or the automatic climate control buttons, interior designers focused on the details to make the cabin of the Sonata a pleasant place to spend time in." -- Motor Trend

Seating

The Sonata Hybrid comes standard with cloth upholstery and six-way manually adjustable front seats. Available seating features include an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a four-way power-adjustable passenger seat, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and memory settings for the driver’s seat.

There's spacious seating in both rows of this hybrid, with enough room for even 6-foot passengers to get comfortable in the back seats.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and an upper tether for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system an ease-of-use rating of Acceptable. The upper tethers are easy to access, but the lower anchors are set too deeply in the seats.

  • "The cabin is also spacious, with enough room for a 6-foot passenger to fit comfortably behind a 6-foot driver." -- Edmunds
  • "Overall, the cabin is open and airy, with more than enough room for four adults, or three-across in back (in a pinch)." -- CNET
  • "I was immediately smitten with the car’s large interior, an elbow-roomy 104.4 cubic feet of passenger volume. The seats are wide and flat with none of those nagging side bolsters some carmakers insert to create a false sense of performance at the cost of comfort." -- Autoweek

Interior Features

This Hyundai has plenty of standard features in its base Blue trim, including an 8-inch touch screen, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, and push-button start. Several safety features are also standard, including blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, lane following assist, a driver attention monitor, adaptive cruise control, and high-beam assist.

The Sonata Hybrid is praised for its easy-to-use infotainment system. Its standard touch screen is mounted high for easy access, its menus are well-arranged, and there are physical audio and climate controls.

Available technology features include a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system, dual USB ports, wireless device charging, a 10.25-inch touch screen, and navigation. Optional advanced safety features include front and rear parking sensors, rear park assist, and highway drive assist.

  • "Hyundai equipped the Sonata with plenty of technology, and the hybrid doesn't fall short. Whether it's the digital key, which works with Android devices to unlock and start the car, or the 12.3-inch screen that works as the instrument cluster, the Sonata Hybrid has a lot to offer." -- Motor Trend
  • "Blue and SEL models come with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a basic feature set, as well as standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Limited trim unlocks the really good stuff: a 10.2-inch central touchscreen complemented by a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Embedded navigation and Bose audio are included in this top-of-the-line treatment, and it's the same Blue Link software Hyundai uses in its other new cars, meaning it's quick to respond to inputs with a generally easy-to-learn menu structure." -- CNET
  • "Climate controls are simple, the high-mounted touchscreen is easy to use, and the overall look is a little less cluttered thanks to a switch from a traditional transmission lever to buttons for park, drive, etc." -- Edmunds

Cargo

There's 16 cubic feet of trunk space in the 2020 Sonata Hybrid, which is above average for the hybrid and electric car class. In fact, this hybrid has nearly as much cargo room as its nonhybrid sibling. A 60/40-split-folding back row is standard.

  • "Even in the cargo area, the Sonata Hybrid has a ton of room—16.0 cubic feet to be precise—and that's pretty good even when you compare it to the gas model's 16.3." -- Motor Trend
  • "Hyundai has repositioned the 2020 Sonata Hybrid's battery, too, resulting in a much more generous 16 cubic feet of space, compared to the 2019 model's 13.4. The standard Sonata, for reference, has 16.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity." -- CNET
  • "The Sonata Hybrid's trunk capacity is amongst the class leaders with 16.0 cubic feet of space. (For comparison, the Accord Hybrid's trunk can hold 16.7 cubic feet.) The load area is flat and wide. If you need additional space, you can drop the rear seats using the rear-seat access levers that are in the trunk." -- Edmunds
