2021 Hyundai Kona EV Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 6.2

The 2021 Hyundai Kona EV has a well-built cabin with a mix of nice materials and hard plastics. Its infotainment system is easy to use, but its rear seats are tight, and plenty of rivals have more cargo space.

  • "The driver’s seat is supremely comfortable and supportive, fit and finish are great. Most of the materials are top-notch, but there are some hard plastics here and there." -- Autotrader
  • "The 2021 Kona features a 2-row/5-passenger interior that’s just as positive in its own way. The front seats are perfectly comfortable, and the controls are easy to see and use, with physical buttons that complement the standard touchscreen (a 7-inch item in most trims and an 8-inch display in the top Ultimate trim)." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Also unique to the Kona Electric is a nicely designed three-tone light gray interior with silver trim. The materials don't seem to be the most durable; the skin of the steering wheel in our tester, for example, was visibly lumpy, but the lightness swathes the cabin in a newfound serenity befitting of its Hawaiian island namesake." -- Autoblog (2019)

Cargo

The Hyundai Kona EV has 19.2 cubic feet of space with all of its seats in use and a total of 45.8 cubic feet behind the front seats. This space is usable, but it’s less than what you get in other subcompact SUVs. These dimensions also trail other models in the hybrid and electric SUV class, such as the Toyota RAV4 Prime and the Kiro Niro EV.

  • "We mentioned above that cargo space isn’t so impressive. Behind the rear seats is 19.2 cubic feet, which is still bigger than the trunk of an average midsize sedan. Folding the seats down makes 45.8 cubic feet. Compare that, though, with the Honda HR-V’s 24.3 and 58.8 cubic feet." -- Autotrader
  • "We really like the adjustable load floor with hidden storage." -- Kelley Blue Book (2020)
  • "Back-seat and luggage space are tight, but no tighter than they are in the gas-fired Kona or any of its subcompact-SUV competitors." -- Automobile Magazine (2019)

Seating

This SUV accomodates five people. Cloth upholstery and heated front seats are standard, and leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat are available. You could also get a heated steering wheel in the top Ultmate trim.

Space is tight in the Kona EV, particularly in the rear. Kids will be OK back there, but taller riders will likely feel cramped due to a lack of legroom. The front seats are comfortable.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat.

  • "The rear accommodations are limited – no big surprise given the Kona’s subcompact stature. Legroom is tight for adults, and headroom is only adequate." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Passenger-volume and cargo-space measurements are almost identical to those of the gasoline version, meaning the Kona Electric has a somewhat cramped back seat and can't swallow much luggage." -- Car and Driver (2019)
  • "Head- and legroom in the back seat are quite good, but note that the Kona is still a small-ish car: if you've got a six-footer in the back, the passenger will need to scoot his or her seat forward." -- CNET (2019)

Interior Features

The base Kona EV features a 7-inch touch screen, smartphone connectivity via Apple Carplay and Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, a six-speaker stereo, two USB ports, Bluetooth, push-button start, proximity keyless entry, and automatic climate control. A 10.3-inch touch screen is available. You can also find models with navigation, wireless device charging, an eight-speaker Infinity stereo, and a sunroof.

Outside of slightly outdated graphics, the infotainment system is great all around. The touch screen responds quickly to user inputs, and there are plenty of well-placed physical buttons and knobs for adjusting volume or climate settings.

Standard driver aids include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a driver condition monitor, and a rearview camera. A head-up display, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors and pedestrian detection are available.

  • "Controls for the driver are easy to see and use, with physical buttons that complement the standard touch screen." -- Kelley Blue Book (2020)
  • "The best part of the interior is the tech interface, which features a stand-up touchscreen with physical buttons set around the perimeter and knobs for volume and tuning. The on-screen menus and graphics are a little dated, but overall it's a system that's attractive and easy to use. Also, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "… the buttons and switches and infotainment were all laid out smartly and within reach." -- Autoweek (2019)
