2019 Hyundai Ioniq Interior Review

Interior: 7.2

The 2019 Hyundai Ioniq has a nice interior overall, with premium materials and a solid build quality. The cabin space is decent for a compact car, and cargo volume is among the best in the class. Infotainment features are user friendly and straightforward.

  • "If you didn’t see the hybrid badges, you would never know the Ioniq was a hybrid/electric vehicle. Far from the Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius school of futuristic design, the Ioniq’s interior is conventional but nicely laid out with the materials and build quality of a premium compact car." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Many of the Ioniq's drab, gray plastics and cloth surfaces look and feel low-rent, though their assembly is commendably tight. The console bin lid and door panel creak readily when touched." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "The interior comes together nicely, and doesn't sacrifice a sense of quality or comfort for the sake of eco responsibility or, for that matter, value. These materials would be right at home in the cockpit of a car a class or two up." -- Autoblog (2017)

The Ioniq seats five people and comes standard with cloth upholstery and six-way manually adjustable front seats. Options include leather seats, a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Ioniq has two complete sets of LATCH car-seat attachments on the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the middle seat. The lower anchors are set too deep in the seat, but it's easy to attach the car-seat straps to the anchors.

The front seats are comfortable in general, but they lack support in certain areas. Back-seat space is typical for a compact car and better than most hybrids this size. Like other small cars, however, there isn't a generous amount of room in this zone.

  • "Rear-seat space is generous for this class, and seat comfort both front and rear is good." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "For all the things we like about the Ioniq, we do have areas to criticize. First is the back seat: Even with the front seats adjusted for our tester's short 5-foot-6 frame, leg room was limited, and headroom wasn't overly generous. … Speaking of the roof line, the back window is split into two pieces, with a large bar running between them. It makes for an odd view out the rear window. There's no rear wiper -- a victim of cost and aerodynamics, we suppose -- but the Ioniq could use one." -- Autotrader (2018)
  • There's ample legroom and headroom for tall drivers, thanks in part to the lack of a sunroof. Inside the car feels airy, and the pedal box for the driver's feet is sufficiently wide. Six-footers in the backseat are somewhat cramped with limited headroom and toe room. Decent kneeroom, though." -- Edmunds (2018)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2019 Ioniq include dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity key entry, push-button start, and a rearview camera. A standard 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system comes with Bluetooth, a USB port, HD Radio, satellite radio, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Optional features include a 7-inch digital instrument cluster display, a sunroof, and an 8-inch touch-screen system with navigation, an eight-speaker Infinity sound system, and wireless device charging. Optional safety tech includes rear parking sensors, driver attention monitoring, automatic high beams, adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking.

The Ioniq's touch-screen interface is straightforward and easy to navigate through menus and controls. Clearly marked physical buttons and knobs serve to adjust audio and climate controls.

  • "All controls are intuitive and user-friendly, with such high-tech must-haves as Apple CarPlay and wireless phone charging." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • " The Ioniq's placement of controls is clear and logical with lots of large buttons. The infotainment screen is high-resolution and doesn't wash out, and the menu flow is simple (no navigation). The redundant hard keys are a nice touch, too." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "You get into the Ioniq Hybrid and, as long as you're familiar with modern infotainment systems, you immediately know where to find things and how to operate them. Hyundai uses a bunch of knobs and buttons in order to ease quick adjustments to the stereo and climate systems, while Mercedes-style 'piano keys' supply easy access to main display screen menus." -- New York Daily News (2017)

The Ioniq hybrid has 26.5 cubic feet of cargo space, and the plug-in and electric models both have 23 cubic feet. Both of those values are among the best in the class. A high load floor and a low roofline make it difficult to hold larger items.

  • "Hyundai says all three lithium-ion polymer packs are similar in design. Because the PHEV uses a larger pack, cargo volume is reduced by 3.5 cubic feet over the Hybrid. Still, with 23 cubic feet of space without the seats folded, there's plenty of room for gear." -- Autoweek (2018)
  • "And while the trunk looks good on paper -- 26.5 cu ft. -- the Ioniq's low roof line limits space for bulky cargo." -- Autotrader (2018)
  • The back seat is split 60/40 and folds nearly flat. The hatch opens high so tall people won't hit their heads on it, but the liftover height is on the tall side. The cargo hold measures 26.5 cubic feet (vs. the Prius' 24.6 cubes) and is wide, if not that tall, at the aft-most point." -- Edmunds (2018)
