2021 Hyundai Ioniq Interior Review

Interior: 7.0

The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq has easy-to-use tech features and a cavernous cargo hold. Most critics say that the cabin is built with materials that look and feel appropriate for the price. However, a few reviews mention that the plastics and upholstery seem cheap. Also, space for rear-seat passengers is lacking.

  • "Parts of the Ioniq Electric’s interior are built from eco-friendly materials including sugar cane and volcanic rock composites. The use of sustainable materials doesn’t detract from the overall feel and look of the interior, which is comfortable regardless of the trim you choose." -- Car and Driver
  • "Many of its drab, gray plastics and cloth surfaces look and feel low-rent, though their actual assembly is tight. Our test car exhibited no squeaks or rattles." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "Far from the Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius school of futuristic design, the Ioniq’s interior is conventional but nicely laid out with the materials and build quality of a premium compact car." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)

The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid has a maximum of 26.5 cubic feet of cargo space, which is more room than most hybrid and electric cars offer. With 23 cubic feet, the plug-in-hybrid and electric models have a bit less room, but there’s still plenty of space for a small car.

  • "The Ioniq fits about as much luggage as other members of its class and more than some larger competitors." -- Car and Driver
  • "Offering similar luggage capacity as the Prius, the Ioniq can handle just about any luggage and gear-carrying requirements that its rival can thanks to its similar hatchback shape. Certainly, the Ioniq's hatchback design is an advantage compared to the Insight and Toyota Corolla Hybrid, which have traditional trunks." -- Edmunds (2020)
  • "And while the trunk looks good on paper -- 26.5 cu ft. -- the Ioniq's low roofline limits space for bulky cargo." -- Autotrader (2020)

Although up to five people can sit in the Ioniq, not all occupants will find an exceptional amount of room. Many rivals offer more rear-seat legroom. Some critics think that the rear seats are comfortable, but others say they feel overly firm.

Cloth upholstery and a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat are standard. The plug-in-hybrid and electric models get heated front seats as standard, and they’re available in the hybrid. Other options include leather upholstery and a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The lower anchors are set deeply in the seats, but the setup is otherwise easy to use.

  • "The rear seats are comfy and will accommodate six-footers, but some other competitors offer more legroom in back." -- Car and Driver
  • "Trouble is, even sitting still the excessively firm seat cushioning makes it hard to relax. It's increasingly noticeable with each passing mile, as it never lets you sink into the seat and take some of the load off your back. Otherwise, the interior is spacious enough and feels assembled to a high standard of quality." -- Motor Trend
  • "For all the things we like about the Ioniq, we do have areas to criticize. First is the back seat. Even with the front seats adjusted for our tester's short 5-foot-6 frame, legroom was limited and headroom wasn't overly generous." -- Autotrader (2020)

Interior Features

The Ioniq's standard infotainment system is composed of an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a USB port, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker stereo. This system is user-friendly, and the responsive touch screen features well-organized menus. There are also physical controls below the screen for some settings. A 10.25-inch touch screen, navigation, satellite radio wireless device charging, and a Harman Kardon stereo are available.

Other standard features include push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, a rearview camera, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and a driver condition monitor.

Optional safety features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, highway drive assist, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, lane follow assist, and cyclist detection.

  • "Hyundai's touchscreen interface is easy to use and performed well in our tests." -- Car and Driver
  • "The center console is smartly laid out to fit daily carry items, and Hyundai's infotainment system is intuitive." -- Motor Trend
  • "The display itself is crisp and sharp, and its tile icons that access various functions (navigation, phone, music files, etc.) are easy to read and manipulate with a quick finger touch while on the move. Likewise, the navigation system processes map movements quickly and fluidly, even when pinch-zooming or scrolling." -- Edmunds (2020)
