Buying Advice

Strong Sales: Hyundai Elantra sales finished in fourth place in the compact car class rankings in 2018. Although the Elantra’s sales are respectable, class leaders like the popular Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla are taking the Elantra’s lunch – both are outselling the Elantra by more than 50 percent. Demand for the Elantra remained steady in 2018 relative to 2017.

Average Prices: A base Elantra sedan starts at $18,100 with an automatic transmission, while the redesigned Elantra GT hatchback starts at $20,450. The base price is only slightly more than some rivals' base models, but you do get a decent amount of features. Still, the Elantra can't touch the similarly priced Corolla sedan and Corolla iM hatch, both of which come standard with a full suite of advance safety features like pre-collision braking and lane departure alert. Save $1,000 on the Elantra by choosing a manual transmission.

Time to Buy: With respectable sales, now may not be a great time to pursue a bargain on an Elantra. If you aren’t sold on the Elantra and standard advanced safety features are important to you, check out the similarly-priced Toyota Corolla.
