2009 Hyundai Elantra Overview

When it was new, reviewers liked how much passenger and cargo room is available in the 2009 Hyundai Elantra. The Elantra’s standard features list is typical for the class. The base model has power windows and door locks and keyless entry. Higher trims and option packages add air conditioning, satellite radio, a stereo with auxiliary and USB inputs, heated front seats, a power sunroof and leather seats. Standard safety features include six airbags and anti-lock brakes, which is typical for the class. SE models have electronic stability control, traction control and brake assist.

With a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, test drivers called the Elantra peppy, but not powerful. Reviewers said the Elantra’s good fuel economy and moderate power make it a solid commuter car. The Elantra's safety score is below the class average.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Honda Civic and Elantra have a lot in common. Both are reliable commuter cars with good fuel economy ratings, though reviewers considered the Civic more fun to drive than the Elantra. The Civic also has better safety ratings. The Elantra also offers more rear-seat space and a larger trunk.

Check out the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta if you want a small used car with spacious seating and a lot of trunk space but with a more upscale interior. The Jetta also has more standard features than the Elantra.
