2020 Hyundai Accent Interior Review

Interior: 6.9

The 2020 Hyundai Accent has a fairly basic cabin design, but it isn't unattractive. There are some hard plastics and other low-rent materials, but this interior is nice by subcompact car standards. Both rows of seats are roomy, though they could use more support. The Accent offers some nice tech features and comes with an easy-to-use touch screen. Many class rivals have more trunk space.

  • "The 2019 Hyundai Accent's 5-passenger cabin is nicely laid out and, like its exterior, appears nicer than its price implies. It's not until you start sitting in the seats and feeling the material that you'll realize this is still a value-oriented car. There is plenty of hard plastic, and if we had a couple of requests it would be for more bolstering of the front seats and an armrest for rear passengers." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "The design is simple and plain, neither upscale nor particularly downmarket, merely existing and functional. There's nothing here to make the teeth grind, despite the liberal use of hard plastic. The graining, however, is decent, and we've seen cheaper-looking stuff used in significantly more expensive vehicles. " -- Car and Driver (2018)
  • "The Accent has a minimal yet attractive interior. There are lots of hard plastics, but they don't look or feel cheap, so the Accent feels like more than it costs." -- Boston Globe (2018)

The Accent seats five and comes standard with cloth upholstery. Heated front seats are available. Most critics say the front seats are comfortable, though some find them lacking in support. Both rows of seats have enough head- and legroom for adult passengers.

For installing child safety seats, there are two full sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats. The lower anchors are set too deep in the seat, but otherwise, the system works well.

  • "The Accent doesn't offer much beyond basic comfort. Its cloth front seats are pretty flat, with almost no bolstering and support. They also absorb heat, making long trips on hot days a challenge." -- Edmunds
  • "A big positive is how comfortable and well-shaped the front seats are, easily bearable for a long day's driving. And space in the rear is acceptable as long as the passengers are under six feet tall." -- Autotrader (2018)
  • "The 2018 Accent has comfortable and supportive front seats and spacious rear accommodations that can easily fit two passengers on a long drive or five for a lunch run." -- Motor Trend (2018)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Accent include a rearview camera, Bluetooth, a USB port, a four-speaker audio system, and a 5-inch touch screen.

Available features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, a sunroof, automatic climate control, push-button start, two additional USB ports, voice recognition, a six-speaker audio system, a 7-inch touch screen, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Hyundai Blue Link (an app that lets you use your smartphone to start your car, adjust the climate, and more).

The Accent's infotainment controls are easy to reach from the driver's seat, and optional features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make it easy to sync your smartphone with the vehicle. These features come in handy because the Accent does not offer navigation. The touch screen works well and responds quickly to inputs. Things aren't all rosy for the Accent, however; it has an incredibly short standard features list, and the base audio system doesn't sound good.

  • "We expect limited technology features on a budget model, but the Accent takes minimalist tech to an extreme. Aside from unimpressive sound quality from the SE trim's stock audio system, the USB outlet doesn't provide enough current to charge today's crop of smartphones while they're tasked with playing music or navigating. The SE's radio is strictly AM/FM, though it can play music from external devices using USB, Bluetooth and the auxiliary jack. Listening via Bluetooth while charging with the cigarette lighter worked best. Bluetooth pairing is fairly easy if slow." -- Edmunds
  • "Even in basic SE trim, the Accent does have some modern features. Cruise control is standard, as is a 60/40-split folding rear seat, Bluetooth, and a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines. The guidelines are worth noting because 1) not all camera systems even have lines and 2) the many pricier vehicles that do offer only static cues. In the Accent, the multi-colored guides move as you turn, creating a better visual estimation of where you're reversing or what you're reversing into." -- New York Daily News (2018)
  • "A 7.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is standard on the SEL and Limited grades; however, there's no available built-in navigation system. Hyundai's integration of both apps is one of the best. Voice commands don't require any specific phrases and are easily accessible via the voice command button on the steering wheel. The main touchscreen functions like a smartphone embedded into the car, with quick responses to inputs." -- Motor Trend (2018)

The Accent provides 13.7 cubic feet of trunk space. That's one of the lowest totals in the class. Keep in mind, however, that several rivals offer hatchbacks with substantially larger cargo areas. There is plenty of small-item storage throughout the Accent’s interior, however. A hands-free power trunk lid is available.

  • "Trunk area is 13.7 cubic feet, which is pretty good, and the rear seats split and fold in 60/40 fashion for extra versatility." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Standard on every Accent are 60/40 slit-fold rear seats that make it easy to load longer cargo. Even without those seats folded, there's plenty of room in the Accent's trunk with a total of 13.7 cubic feet. This beats out the Ford Fiesta, which has 12.8 cubic feet and edges out the Toyota Yaris iA with its 13.5 cubic feet." -- Boston Globe (2018)
  • "The SE, by comparison, offers an open, between-the-seats double-cupholder layout but the glovebox is large enough to hide two standard-size water bottles and a mess of other things you'd like to keep hidden from snooping eyes." -- New York Daily News (2018)
