Everyone likes a good deal, and for those willing to forgo a new car for a lightly used one, the Hyundai CPO program represents a great value. As with all certified pre-owned programs, you get some of the benefits of new-car ownership – a manufacturer warranty and inspection – and the main benefit of a used car – a lower price. Which Used Hyundai Vehicles Are Eligible?
Most Hyundai vehicles under five years old are eligible to be sold as certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles, even if they aren’t manufactured anymore. This includes Hyundai Genesis models that are now under the umbrella of the new Genesis luxury brand.
There are three variations on Hyundai’s CPO program. The terms, conditions, and eligibility information laid out in this article concern manufacturer CPO purchases. Hyundai allows third parties to certify vehicles, but buyers should be aware that the inspection and warranty process of these certifications is determined by the third-party seller. Each CPO Hyundai undergoes a 150-point inspection performed by technicians at a dealership. The points of inspection follow strict company standards. If a particular component does not meet the expectation of the technician, the company may choose to repair or recondition the item to raise it to CPO standards. If a part cannot be repaired, it may be replaced. If a component cannot be repaired, reconditioned, or replaced, the vehicle will not be sold as CPO.

Each CPO vehicle comes with the remainder of the original 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Newer CPO vehicles come with the remainder of the original five-year/60,000-mile new vehicle warranty, should there be any eligibility remaining. A $50 deductible is applicable to each repair visit.
In addition to a warranty and the comfort of Hyundai’s 150-point CPO inspection process, each CPO vehicle comes with a Carfax vehicle history report, a 10-year/unlimited-mileage roadside service guarantee, rental car and travel interruption reimbursement while necessary repairs are taking place, a complimentary three-month SiriusXM satellite radio trial period on suitably equipped vehicles, and the option of purchasing an extended vehicle service warranty.
Hyundai calculates these extras to add more than $2,000 in value to each CPO vehicle.
How Does It Compare to Rivals?
Nearly all automobile manufacturers offer CPO vehicles. Honda and Nissan sell CPO vehicles that are up to six years old. Kia CPO vehicles have nearly identical conditions and guarantees as Hyundai’s, which makes sense because they have the same parent company.
In order to be listed as CPO, Honda requires their vehicles to undergo a 182-point inspection while Nissan’s CPO vehicles undergo a less-rigorous 167-point inspection. Toyota, Nissan, and Honda offer better warranty coverage on CPO purchases.
How to Buy a Hyundai CPO Vehicle
Hyundai CPO vehicles can be purchased at almost every authorized dealership. They can also be purchased from third-party sellers but, as mentioned previously, buyers should be aware that those vehicles may not meet the same standards as those sold as manufacturer CPO.
