2009 HUMMER H3T Overview

When it was new, reviewers praised the 2009 Hummer H3T for its best-in-class off-road abilities. While some said that the H3T rides decently on highways and city streets, others wrote that the H3T should not be your first choice if you don’t plan to go off road. Some auto writers disliked the H3’s base five-cylinder engine. They said that the base engine is adequate for low-speed off-roading and city driving, but that the H3T needs more power on the highway. As a result, most preferred the available V8 engine, even though it comes with a drop in fuel economy. Five-cylinder models achieve 14/18 mpg city/highway, while V8 models get 13/16; both ratings are fairly low for the class. All H3Ts have four-wheel drive. Maximum towing capacity is 5,900 pounds with the V8, which falls short of some V6- and V8-equipped rivals'.

The H3T comes only as a five-seat crew cab truck, and most reviewers were pleased with the cabin. They said the seats in front and back are comfortable and spacious, and the overall material quality is good. Standard equipment includes Bluetooth and a six-speaker stereo with satellite radio. Available features include a Monsoon premium stereo system, leather seats, front heated and power-adjustable seats, navigation and a backup camera.

Other Trucks to Consider

The 2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac was praised by reviewers for its comfortable ride and upscale interior, as well as the power from its available V8. Although the Ford’s bed is shorter, it can tow heavier trailers than the H3T.

Although it isn’t as capable off road as the H3T, the 2009 Toyota Tacoma is available with an off-road package that helps it when venturing off the beaten path. The Tacoma earns better fuel economy ratings than the H3T, and critics called it one of the more refined choices in the class.
