2009 HUMMER H2 SUT Review

While it is one of the most off-road capable trucks in the class, the 2009 Hummer H2 SUT’s lousy fuel economy, clumsy handling and short bed may limit its appeal.

Pros & Cons

  • Tremendous off-road capability
  • Cramped cabin
  • Feels underpowered on highways

2009 HUMMER H2 SUT Overview

When it was new, reviewers praised the H2 SUT for its incredible off-road capability and relative stability on paved roads, despite its large size. With its standard V8, reviewers said the H2 SUT felt adequately powered driving through the city, but they also noted that the H2 SUT’s weight and poor aerodynamics add up to lackluster acceleration on the highway. Because of its weight, the 2009 H2 SUT did not receive EPA fuel economy estimates. Maximum towing capacity is 8,200 pounds, which is significantly less than a properly-equipped Ford F-150.

While one test driver wrote that the H2 SUT has an attractive cabin with premium materials, others noted that it felt cramped inside, despite the H2 SUT’s large exterior dimensions. The H2 SUT seats up to five, and most reviewers said that both rows of seats needed more legroom. Like the Chevrolet Avalanche and Cadillac Escalade EXT, the H2 SUT features GM’s Midgate, which folds down between the bed and cab to increase cargo capacity. The H2 SUT comes standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, leather seats, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, Bluetooth and a Bose stereo with a six-disc CD changer, auxiliary input jack and satellite radio.

Other Trucks to Consider

The 2009 Ford F-150 has a comfortable and composed ride. It also has one of the highest towing capacities among 2009 full-size pickups, and with longer cargo bed options, it’s a better choice if you frequently haul cargo.

Reviewers liked the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 for its smooth, powerful engine choices and refined ride quality. While it doesn’t have the off-road ability of the H2 SUT, the Silverado is available in multiple cab configurations.
